Tascam US-428 replacement? good USB DAW controller & I/O ? |
|
|
I am a happy owner of a Tascam US-428 - it connects with USB, records 4
channels simultaneously (2 ins are XLR plus 2 hi-z guitar ins), has 8
faders, great sounding DAC and ADC (no soundcard is necessary), and is
simple to use. I have had success with Cubase SX 2.x and am happy as a
clam, except when my friend started looking and I recommended it, I was
sad to see they are discontinued. They can probably find it on ebay or
wherever, but I am curious, what unit did Tascam replace the 428 with?
This is one of the most versatile and easy to use pieces of recording
equipment I have ever had the pleasure to work with - I would think
they might come out with a USB2 version that would support more inputs
or something. What is out there that is comparable?

USB runs at ( we're told ) 12 MBit/second, with each subchannel @
1.5 MBit/second. 4 channels @ 44.1KHz sampling, 16 bit is 2,822,400
bits per second.
But with USB, there is also overhead. I beleive there were 8
channel units avilable for USB, but I have no idea how reliable
they were. I know the Tascam 8 track cassette recorders were
"four at a time" units; maybe that's just a sort of magic
number for Tascam.
In general, use online catalogs as a reference for what companies
are producing these days:

The 1884 is apparently Firewire, which is supposedly
a 400 megabit interface.
There's also http://www.harmony-central.com .
