Being new to HDTV, I was just curious as to what criteria networks use to
broadcast football games in Hi-Def. I took a rare Sunday off today to watch
my beloved Bengals, and to my dismay it was shown in standard definition.
All the later games were in Hi-Def. Plus, not one Big Ten game has been
shown in Hi-Def this year, while every other conference is shown in that
format. Any ideas?

I've had my HDTV for just a couple weeks and every NFL game, no matter which
network, has been in HD on my Time-Warner cable.
And I watched the Wisconsin/Illinois game two Saturdays ago in HD on
ESPN-HD.
But yesterday's Wisconsin/Perdue game was on ABC only in SD.
(Disappointing).
Dunno anything about their criteria.

WHO-DEY!!!!

I'm in the same boat but CBS only show 3 games per Sunday in Hi-Def and
sadly we (the Bengals) are rarely on that list. I would recommend you send
an e-mail(s) to CBS Sports, Sony (who sponsors the HD broadcasts) and the
NFL to complain about this crap! If we happened to be in an NFC city we'd
see all our games in HD.

Really, how can Sony expect to sell me, or anyone else in an AFC city, an HD
set (I actually own a Mits DLP set) when one of the main content sources is
not even broadcast in the format every week. (Don't get me started on their
excuses for not showing all games HD!!)

The way to find out which 3 games CBS will show in HD is to go to their
website and look at the broadcast schedule but it seems to only be updated
the week leading in.

WHO-DEY!!

Last NFL season CBS-HD rented 3 or 4 1080i HDTV Trucks for NFL
games...
CBS appears to allocate only 3 rental/or owned HDTV
trucks this season.... for 6 or 7 Sunday games

FOX-HD bought 6 new 720p HDTV trucks last season... It appears
FOX -HD owns 6 or more HDTV trucks today based upon
NFL & Major League BaseBall game broadcasts....

College games I'm guessing are a 'money' call between
CBS-HD, ESPN-HD, and other smaller-HD remote truck capacity.
If you got a BIG Sponsor for HDTV... You're Game could
be in HD..... I'm winging this comment...

Thats because CBS is too cheap to do all the NFL AFC games in Hi
Def. This has been going on all year. They are only doing select games
in Hi Def of what CBS thinks is the highest interest. As far as I can
tell Fox is doing all the NFC games in Hi Def.

Fox actually can only do 6 games/week in HD, but there are only one or two
weeks that they have 7 games.

Criteria? The only real one is $$ and demand.

Fox does almost all their Sunday NFC games in 720p.

CBS only does a limited number of their Sunday AFC games in 1080i - their
nationally featured game always is.

CBS does their Saturday featured SEC college game in 1080i.

ABC does Monday night football in 720p. AFAIK, none of their college
broadcasts are in HD.

ESPN does some college and Sunday night NFL games in HD. I don't get HD cable
so I don't know anything else about it.

Newscorp owns FOX and DirecTV. I think that NFL Sunday Ticket superfan is
the reason why they have invested so much into HDTV. I get all FOX games in
HD except locals. CBS only does, what it considers, it's best 3 games in
HD. I don't think ABC will show any College Football in HD until the Bowl
Games.

Where I am screwed is on the local channels that are 50 miles away. I have
to go buy an antenna if I want any of those games or programs in HD. That
will end up costing me $200 to set that up.

Local Broadcasting rules are B.S.
