| Are you saying here that there is no output from a standard HD cable
| box (we have Time Warner)that can be put into a standard DVD recorder

Many do have an analog SD output. In the future expect even this to go away.

My Sony DVD recorder only has S-Video input. How does one record HDTV
channels? Seems like all VCRs and DVD-Recorders are going to be obsolete
in a few years.
You can record HDTV shows right now, but only on a computer. As an
alternative, you can download just about all popular network shows at
alt.binaries.multimedia. They are generally available a day or so after
they
are broadcast. You can play them back in HDTV format, with DD5.1 sound,
using a home theatre computer (HTPC), such as the Hewlett Packard z545.
Most
such shows are in xvid or divx format, and codecs are readily available.
They work great with Windows Media Center Edition 2005.
|
Not just computers. I do just fine recording HD on my LG LST-3410A DVR for
scheduled recording, and my Mitsubishi HS-HD1100U D-VHS VCR for archiving.
Since the DVR, VCR, and my Sony plasma TV all have firewire, they all get
along rather nicely. Of course, I'm recording strictly OTA HD, but I'm not
complaining.

| With a HD recorder. Personally, I'm putting my own together with a PC
| and will hopefully end up with 4 tuners so i can record 4 shows at once.
| Just got the first tuner a few days ago. I'm actually thinking of custom
| building them once I get to know it a little better. A single tuner
| ATSC/NTSC should run about $800 (monitor not included).
I'm looking for a tuner card that does BOTH ATSC and NTSC (compression
optional for the NTSC source), and can work under Linux (at minimum, open
SW/HW interface specs so someone could write drives, if no open source
ones presently exist). Doing QAM and COFDM, and 100% frequency agile,
would be a nice plus. Note that closed specs and closed source drivers
are not what I want (even though I could reverse engineer the driver ... I
don't want to have to do that).
|
I got the Fusion HDTV5 Gold + card. I messed with it for a couple of days.
Got NTSC working fine on it. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get
atsc (via dvb) working. I know it works, but I'm real new to dvb and
capture cars in general. Kernel 2.6.14 supports the card pretty well. Been
busy with other things for a few days. the pcHDTV HD3000 cards is a Linux
only card that should work well. I've proposed a linux pvr newsgroup in
alt.config the other day. Not much feedback yet. Will probably go ahead
and create it sometime this week. I'm thinking alt.video.ptv.pvr.linux
just to keep it in the same as the Tivo, Replay, and UtimateTV groups. On
things for sure. There's no central location for this type disccussion
right now.

OK, got the Fusion HDTV5 Gold card running with MythTV 0.18.1 on Mandriva
Linux 2005LE using vanilla kernel 2.6.14. There's a lot of options for
MythTV so I'm going to play with it for a month or more before adding more
tuner cards to it. Haven't hooked up the remote yet. Digital sure beats
the heck out of analog though.

Sure seems like the Motorola box provided by my cable company records
HiDef programs in HiDef.
Am I confused? |

It's not possible on the current generation of DVD recorders, you need an
HD-DVD or Blueray recorder. The HD recorders should be available sometime
next year.
HD DVRs have been available for sometime. DVRs are the best solution for
time shifting so if that's what you want to do call your cable company and
get an HD DVR set top box. If you aren't using cable or satellite then get
a TIVO. |

The only Tivo that records HD is a DirecTV box (satellite).

Except for COFDM, you just described the HD-3000 card from pcHDTV.
NTSC, ATSC, QAM (unencrypted). http://pchdtv.com |

No, not confused. I have the same box now and get great HD recordings. |
I could also record from HD shows on my VCR, but the recordings weren't
in high-def. Still the results looked much better than the same program
recorded from an analog channel -- West Wing on channel 4 and on channel
904, for example.
Does either Dish or DirecTV provide one-box DVR and HD reception as my
cable company does? The web site mentions DVR and HD receivers but not
as a single box, as far as I can tell.
