I'm trying to convert my DVarchive downloads to DivX for transfer to a
PPC. Since the MPGs downloaded from the replay are finicky (will crash
most media players for example), the converter programs I normally use
like PocketDivX don't produce anything that my PPC can read. Anyone out
there who has done this and can tell me what the steps are? Thanks.

I have never tried this and to be honest don't have a clue as to what
"PPC" means (or DivX for that matter)

What I do have is a very finikey spacebar on thismachine

However the Elcard "Moonlight" Decoder package seems to make many media
player programs sit down and play nice with Replay mpeg's I know they
improved mine.

Today though I am running a computer w/o them but I have NOT tried to
burn a DVD from a replay file with this machine(and very likely will
not,I use another elcard equipped machine for that task)

There is nothing "finicky" about Replay mpg. They are MPEG2. Any player
I have ever tried works fine (assuming you have a proper codec
installed). Replay is very tolerant of time code errors. If you have
problems with sync errors after conversion, you could edit first in Womble.

Could PPC be Personal PC (another excessively generic name)?

By context, it means PocketPC - a Windows powered PDA.

PPC generally either means that, or PowerPC - chip architecture used
in the current Macs, first gen TiVo, etc. But the latter wouldn't
make sense in that context.

DivX is some video format, but it always reminds me of the failed "PPV
DVD" system that was an invasion of privacy.

Well that's deliberate. DIVX was the Circuit City-backed DVD
competitor that was dreamt up by a bunch of lawyers, it stood for
Digital Video Express. They thought they could release a system that
would have strict content controls and could sell the discs cheap -
because you had to pay to watch the discs you owned. Then there was
DIVX Silver, which was something like an extended subscription, and
DIVX GOLD which was basically just DVD (buy the disc once, watch it
forever) but not compatible. DIVX bombed for three main reasons:

1. DVD exploded MUCH faster, and bigger, than anyone expected. The
DIVX folks predicted they had a couple year window to get market
traction - turned out they had a few months.

2. A lot of HW vendors wouldn't sign on to DIVX, Circuit City was the
near-exclusive retailer (meaning a lack of coverage), and the movie
studios only give it lackluster backing.

3. On top of all that, you had to have a phone line to connect the
unit to and have an account that tracked your viewing. And, unlike
TiVo, etc, the data WAS personally linked to the account - making for
a big invasion of privacy.

So it was just dumb. It had a life of one year - June 1998 - June
1999.

When the codec crowd decided to name their new codec, they
deliberately called it DivX;-) - the smiley was part of the name - as
a jab at the then failed commercial product.

Over time the smiley was dropped and the name became just DivX.

I've had one of those. Apparently a defective keyboard. Another
keyboard has a "power off" button that's too easy to hit
unintentionally. Instead of "power", I feel like calling it something
unprintable.

Or you can use VideoLAN that doesn't need CODECs.

Last time I tried it (on a machine that had definitely never had
Elecard installed), it worked properly. Maybe DVD authoring programs
have improved.

Go to http://www.videohelp.com/ and search for 'Virtualdub-MPEG2.' There
are also lotsa links for help.

Assuming you have DivX installed, fire up VirtualDub-MPEG2, open the
video file you'd like to convert and start choosing your audio/video
compression options. It also works with XviD (the open source version of
DivX) and many other audio/video codecs you may have installed.
