Where have they gone?

Bought a tivo the other day only to find that it only has one tuner.
Seems that they don't have the duals anymore. Can anyone tell me why
the company would abandon this killer app?

I have directv and have an old 35 hour dual. I use it so much that I
would like to add more hours without having to do the hack.

Anybody have trouble recording 2 shows on a 2 tuner Direct TV DVR and
watching a third program on a standard tuner? On the 2 channel you have to
watch one of the recording programs. Does switch back and forth cause
problems? I was recording two programs at the same time and one seems to
have been dropped before it was finished.

No problems at all ever, no.

You talk of 3 tuners, I figure there are 2 ways to interpret that. One
meaning is, you can record 2 things at once while watching a previously
recorded show. Or, you can record 2 things at once and watch a third live
showing ONLY if you have another receiver. The DirecTiVo does not allow
you to record 2 shows and watch a third in real time.

But to answer your question, I've never had a problem with any of it
working as expected.

Most likely because of bad guide data. Call DirecTV and complain.

On Tuesday many news programs ran late because of election returns,
messing up recording of programs after them.

mike...simple explanation...directv is trying to get away from tivo, so now
if you ask for a dvr you will get a new non-tivo unit (unless you specify
that you want a "tivo"). if you follow the herd of people that like tivo's
because of their hacking capabilities, then that means that the new one is
simply a dvr, not a "directv receiver with tivo technology". tivo technology
lets you do a lot more than you know, and nobody currently knows how to do
the same type of hacking on the new units. if you ask for an "hd-dvr" or
"hd-tivo" you will get a true tivo. but that will soon be changing as well.
the guys aren't trying to play word games with you, you just don't have any
clue how little you know about this stuff compared to a lot of the people
here.

Oh? What are they? Are you playing word games? Do you want us to say
"DirecTV receiver with TiVo technology"? Would that make you happier?

The DVR pictured on that page isn't a TiVo, it is the new NDS DVR.
Yes, the title of the page still says DirecTV DVR With TiVo, but
that's not the product shown.

However, if you specifically ask for the TiVo-based DVR, they still
offer them.

I think it's currently impossible to ask for a DirecTV DVR and NOT get a
TiVo. Is that not the case in the Detroit/NDS-beta areas?

This is simply not true, DTV has no other DVR on the market currently
that does not run Tivo.

Which, after being publically released, will likely be hacked just as
well.

But the people you would be asking on the phone know even less.

Model R15 runs "XTV" software by NDS.

Which, after being publically released,

Model R15 was publicly released this week. It's in stores and
subscribers' homes now. And yes, DirecTV has indicated that this unit
will be shipped to anyone ordering a non-HD DVR (unless he/she
explicitly requests a TiVo-based box, in which case one of the
remaining R10s will be dispatched until supplies are exhausted).

That remains to be seen. The NDS software isn't Linux-based, so
hacking it certainly won't be nearly as easy. Also keep in mind that
the most recent TiVo-based DirecTV DVR model (R10) has not yet been
hacked.

Got some links for this stuff, other than Tivo COmmunity and Philips site
(which has NO real INFO) I find nothing other than Skylife buying into
the NDS box.

TiVo Community is an excellent resource for R15 information. See
Earl's review:

Another good resource is DBSForums:

Philips is not connected to the product, other than the fact that
DirecTV initially contracted them as an assembler (a deal that
subsequently fell through). Any R15 documentation that references
Philips is outdated.

The problem was that you searched for "xtv" instead of "nds." The
company is mentioned with far greater frequency than its software
brand.
