New TV |

My TV is starting to show problems, and I want to replace it. I am looking
for advice on what to get. I would like to make the jump to HD but am not
going to give up Tivo to do it. Anyone know the latest rumors on the
standalone HD Tivo? I have heard that HD TV's do not always do a good job
with standard singles, anyone experience this. I currently record mostly in
High, can't see much difference when recording in Best. With a higher end TV
will there be more of a difference? I am currently using a 27in and would
like to move to something larger.
Any experience with LCD, Plasma, vs. CRT with Tivo and how quality looks?
Any other advice?
Thanks Matt

Looks good with my 42" plasma. Although I wonder how TIVO knew to change
the screen resolution automatically...

This is really a function of the TV, not the Tivo. Some HD sets don't
display SD signals very well, whatever the source. Newer sets are
handling this better, but I recommend checking out how the set you
intend to buy looks with an SD signal before you buy it.

Doubtful. A larger screen may make some artifacts look worse, but you
should be sitting farther back.

LCD - Fair brightness, poor black levels, good detail, possible screen
door effect if you sit too close. Very expensive for very large
screens, more moderate for 30 - 36" screens
Plasma - Excellent brightness, ok black levels but loses detail in dark
images. Expensive, but cheaper than LCD at large sizes. Possible
burn-in with no way to repair (newer models are less susceptible). Very
shallow. Beware of sets that aren't true HD (lots of "Enhanced
Definition" sets out there that don't display true 720p or 1080i).
DLP rear projection - good black levels, great prices even for large
screens, moderate size (7" to 14" deep). Lamps can be replaced easily.
But some people can notice a rainbow effect from the colorwheels used.
CRT - very good black levels, excellent prices. But very heavy at
larger sizes, 36" is about the largest available and is tough to move
around.
Of the above, if price is important I'd probably recommend the DLP RPTV
if you have the room and don't mind a larger cabinet and the rainbow
effect doesn't bother you (most people don't even notice it). Plasmas
are sexy and very bright, but very expensive. LCDs get very expensive
when they get up in size. CRT's weigh a *ton* above 30".
LCOS sets are coming out, but they'll be very expensive as well at first.
Read up. Extremetech.com has had some good practical articles on HD
setups. Beware of poor SD display, especially if you foresee watching a
lot of SD shows. The Samsung DLP models have excellent reputations, but
others are catching up. Make sure the set you get has the connections
you need (DVI, HDMI, component, etc.)
Sure,

For price-performance on a limited budget I recommend the Toshiba
30HF85. It retails for $800 and has a great picture. CRT's are hard
to beat in this size. They have a bright clear HDTV picture that I am
really impressed with. Unfortunately you will need an external HDTV
tuner. I use the Samsung SIR-T451 - $250
I expect the cablecard / OTA HD TiVo to hit the CES in February.

You can easily find another 27" TV for under $300. Best Buy has a 27" Sharp
listed at $159.99 in this week's flyer.
In other words, consider buying another 27" as a stop-gap until you know what
you really want to get. Wait until the new HD Tivo is available. Then go
looking for an HD set. Then stick the 27" in the bedroom, sell it, or give it
away. |
