Hi all,
I am having a Sony DCR HC18 mini dv camcorder. I have some Sony miniDV
cassettes (without memory) recorded on this camcorder in the SP mode.
When I playback these cassettes on this camcorder, the date and time of
recording is displayed in the bottom right corner of the LCD screen
(the camcorder has an option of switching ON or OFF the dispaly of this
data). Now I wish that this data (date and time) is automatically
included in videos when I transfer the videos from camcorder to PC (and
then on CD). I have tried transferring videos from mini dv to PC and
CD, but this data is not recorded (included) in the videos transferred.
The only option I have is to manually insert this data in the form of a
Title. Is there any way this data can be automatically included?
Thanks

It's a bit like the EXIF metadata included in a digital stills camera JPEG
file - it's there, you just need an application that supports it. With
stills, almost all do, and some allow you to change that data. With video -
I've seen a couple, but only plugins.

What video editor do you use?

I'm not familiar with your particular model, but most Sonys allow you to
do what you require. Here's a *general* walk-through.

1. Switch your camcorder to VCR.
2. Enable the Remote Commander in your menu system (enabled
is the default setting).
3. Press Data Code on your Remote Commander.
4. On your camcorder's menu system select Date Data.
3. On your Remote Commander press Data Code again (you
may have to do this immediately after the video editor starts
capturing).

Sorry I can't be more precise, but the various models do things in a
slightly different ways.

If you can't do the above, most video editors allow you to insert one or
more layers. By putting the date/time in the appropriate position on a
still picture, you can make the background transparent [1]. Then by
putting that still on a layer positioned above your video in the
timeline it will be superimposed on your video. You can usually stretch
the digital still clip to run along the video clip(s) to the length you
require. Any graphic/drawing program will allow you to produce a still
with the date/time on it.

I've managed to borrow a 17/19/21/22 manual from a friend, and if you
look on page 46, you'll see that under Etc Others selection, you have a
DISP OUT option - and it looks as if you should be setting it to
V-OUT/LCD enabled.

The original time date stamp shows on analog, but not on 1394 input. Capture
the video using the S-Video output or RCA jacks with the display on will
provide this stamp on your video.

The info is there but most NLEs don't allow you to access it.
For this purpose, try DVdate at http://paul.glagla.free.fr/dvdate_en.htm
It's free so the only thing to lose is some download time.
