Hi. I kinda wanted to get some opinions on this from those who know about
camcorders. I want to get a camera to use to make videos and I'm torn
between the Sony VX1000 and the VX2000. Price really isn't that big of a
problem.... I've been watching both cameras on Ebay. The VX1000 goes for
about $400 less than the VX2000. I figured if I'm going to spend $800-$900
on the VX1000, $400 or $500 more wouldn't be that big of a deal and I'd get
a more up to date camera with better features. I like that the VX2000 has
the lcd screen that you can rotate around and use in addition to the
traditional viewfinder. Another thing that makes me lean towards the VX2000
is that the VX1000 is a 10 year old camera and the VX2000 is going to be
more up to date.

I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on this? Have you heard
anything bad/good about either camera that I should take into
consideration? I've dug around in Google Groups, but there's literally
hundreds and thousands of posts containing the two model names. I
appreciate any help or advice anyone has. Thanks.

James

I have a VX2000, and I've used a VX1000. The VX2000 offers the most bang
for the buck of any miniDV camcorder -- it produces stunning video, great
color saturation, low noise, and fantastic low-light performance. The
VX1000 is noiser and has poorer low-light performance.

If I were buying one of those at this moment I'd definitely go for the
2000. I've used both many times, and own a 1000 which is 10 years old
now. It still works - mostly - but the design of the 2000 is years
younger and it shows.
Actually if I had the cash I'd get an FX1, not for the HDV - not much
use around here - but for the latest DV technology and chips.

Canonboy?
.....Actually I've had only Sony camcorders in the last 15 yrs....I just got
my first Canon.....and it's very comparable in features, usability, and
quality.....I've always considered the top 2 brands either Sony or
Canon....(actually I think the Canon shines a bit more in the lens
dept.).....

Is the 2000 even available? I'm researching the 2100, released in
2004, but the 2000 model was released in the year 2000.

Is there someplace that I can look up the year some particular camera
model was first released?

As LurfysMa <invalid@invalid.invalid> so eloquently put:

I first browsed an eRetailer to find what was available, such as

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

Then I started googling on model numbers to catch me up, finding
reviews, some with release and review dates that brought me up to
date.

The 2100 is a minor upgrade to the 2000, but is todays model. Here's a
decent review (with some mistakes) that compares the two:

<http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/sony-dcr-vx2100-camcorder-review.htm>

I caught up on technology (I won't be an early adaptor of HDV quite
yet) and made a spreadsheet of features and capabilities between the
various Nikon, Canon, JVC, etc. models and am currently meditating
about them.

So far, the VX2100 is at the top of the heap.
