I would like to take home movies made on my DV camcorder and put them on
DVD. I have tried some PC authoriing type programs in the past but haven't
been too impressed. I don't know if it's worth it to invest in another
software program and take my chances or try doing it with a standalone DVD
recorder. If I got a standalone DVD recorder, I could also use it to record
programs off tv for later viewing. But I don't know if they are anymore
reliable, and don't know if I'd be losing quality when going from camcorder
to recorder. Does anyone have advice for me? Is a standalone DVD recorder
a better choice, or PC?

If you're using XP Movie Maker is built into it.
I use MM to capture and create the movie from DV, save as DV-AVI format then
burn with Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4. MM will not burn DVD's.
I also have Premiere Elements 2 which is more sophisticated and I'm still on
a steep learning curve.
Tried Pinnacle Studio 9 but it simply wouldn't work.

I've had bad experiences with Pinncles in the past so I don't think I'd use
them again anyway.

The SA DVDR is not a bad idea for capturing. I use a Pioneer model.
The best thing about it is that it is easy and straigt forward. Also,
for OTA capture quality is that of the original broadcast on playback.
Big difference on my 52" RP tele.

I would suggest capturing in the highest quality available on the SA,
generally a bit rate of 8000 for an hours worth of video at full D1
(720x480). One can fit more on DVD at half D1, but we can't add pixels
or quality back in later.

Capture to a DVD-RW disk.

Many of us like VideoRedo ($50) on my PC to convert the DVD-RW to DVD
compliant/audio-video-sync mpeg and edit what you don't want, combine
other segments, etc... It is very reliable and there is no editor like
it for analog captured videos or frame acurate clips/cuts.

Use another mpeg editing package to add effects such as fades, wipes,
picture-in-picture, titles, etc... I use Pinnacle 8, but don't
recommend due to the problems reported by others. Ulead has a much
better reputation around here. Womble is another to consider. There
is no best editing software for everyone. Many of us use several
depending on the requirement. About $100.

I like TmpgEnc DVD Author ($50) for creating the DVD files. It never
encodes. Very fast and flexible for simple navigation projects.

Dvd Shrink (freeware) is my choice for creating the DVD .iso file and
also lowering the captured bitrate (with deep analysis) to ensure that
the video will fit onto the DVD at the highest quality.

I like DvdDecrypter (freeware) to burn the .iso file to the DVD at 4X
with verify on.

There are other packages that will do everything for you, but not with
the same amount of control in my experience. They are seperate tasks
anyway, and the quality of wach step should be checked along the way.

Cheers....

Try this article at http://www.newcyberian.com/howto/dvdauthoring.html. It
has links to many free software on DVD authoring. The example in the
article is about making DVD from DV and that should be exactly what you
need. Good luck!
