Specifically, I'm looking for any pointers with the car I just
purchased:

A 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 L Automatic.

I've been planning a system and saving my pennies for a long, long time
and the time is finally here. I know it's a long shot, but I'm trying
to prepare myself for any problems that I might come across! So if
anyone has ANY information that might save me a whole bunch of
heartache on this vehicle, please - I beg of you - tell me what quirks
and oddities I might find.

Any and all help appreciated!

Thanks,
~Mister.Lull

Okay, How about a little more of a direct question.

The last person to own this car put in a Panasonic CD Player. In-Dash
stock location. It doesn't turn off when the car turns off. Did they
just wire it wrong, or is there something I should know about the
accessory power wire in these cars?

Do you mean it doesn't turn off when the keys it *out* of the
ignition? If so, then it would appear that they didn't wire it
properly. Otherwise, if the key is in the ignition and the car
is off and the headunit is still on, then that's normal.

Yeah, key out of the ignition, car off, headlights and all other
accessories off...

I can even get in the car after it's been off all night, put the
faceplate on the stereo, and turn it on - keys still in my pocket.

I do realize that on most vehicle's this is simply not wired correctly.
The only reason I ask about this at all is that the odometer and clock
are both LCD displays in with the speedometer and whatnot, and they
never turn off either!!!

I guess I'll just have to find out what they did wrong when I put in
the new head unit...

Thank you!

How Old is the VW?
A lot of the older VW's did not have an acc wire, so they could stay on all
the time.
Most newer VW's have the Acc wire so should tuen off with key

Best guess is whoever wired the headunit tied all the power wires together
behind the head unit. Or there may be a wire jumper on the fuse box. If a
fuse blew, they may have jumped a fuse to get power again and never fixed
it.

Yeah, I remember several that didn't have the accessory power... those
that did, it was usually switched simply by putting the key in the
ignition, no need to turn it. Or was it, you had to turn it to enable
the acc, but acc wouldn't turn off until you removed the key? Hmmm,
it's been a good 15 years since I put a stereo in a VW.

The radio could not be turned on until you moved the key forward to the
"Accessory point." Once on, it stayed on, no matter where the key was
(start, acc, or all the way off). It only turned off completely once
you took the key out. So you could be driving around with the radio
on, and turn the car completely off, but the radio would remain on. As
soon as you took out the key, it would shut off. Conversely, you could
not just put the key in and the radio came on. Like I said above, you
had to turn the key to the accessory point before it would work.

This is direct from my buddy who had a 97

What kind of an installation are you planning on doing? Will it just
be a simple "deck-and-four", or are you adding amplifier(s),
subwoofers, signal processors, etcetera?

I had a 1986 Jetta GLI a while back, and except for the factory radio
staying on even after the ignition was turned off (which Mike has
already mentioned), the only other thing I remember about the Jetta
was that it was VERY susceptible to engine noise, particularly
alternator whine.

I had a head unit, equalizer, "Epicenter" bass restoration processor,
two amps and a CD changer, and I had *horrible* alternator whine until
I ran ALL of the ground wires (even the one for the head unit) to a
single grounding point. I ran all of the ground wires to a
distribution block in the trunk, and then ran a single heavy-gauge
ground wire from the distribution block up to the negative terminal of
the battery.

Ever since that install, that's how I ground ALL of my systems now.
I'd rather spend a little extra time wiring everything once instead of
finding out that I've got ground loops and going back to re-do it all.

This is the setup:

Panasonic CQ-C5410U Head Unit
--Puts out 25 watts per channel rms
--Plays Mp3 CDRs and CDRWs (a huge plus for me)

4 Pioneer TS-G1640R 2-way 6.5" Speakers
--Powered by the HU
--Each runs 30 watts *suggested* rms

1 Jensen KS210 10" DVC Sub
--rated for 175 watts rms at 2 ohms
--Fs of 31.38 Hz
--Jensen's titanium line from when they were less crappy.

Custom box (tuned to 26 Hz specifically for this sub)
--Almost 3.7 ft^3
--Designed to look fully integrated into trunk (clean)

JBL BP150.1 Class D subwoofer Amp
--Puts out 150 watts rms at 2 ohms
--Maximum Current Draw is only 14 Amps.

It's not the system to end all systems, but it will be the best system
I've ever had, and I can always upgrade later...

Also, like I was saying up at the top of the post, all of that is going
into a 1997 Jetta GL.

Do you have the Thiele-Small parameters for the Jensen KS210 sub? I
don't have a lot of experience with ported enclosures, but 3.7 cubic
feet sounds like a LOT of space for a single 10" sub. Is that what
Jensen's recommending?

Although ported boxes tend to be a little bigger than their sealed
counterparts, 3.7 cubes does sound a little big for a 10...

I got the box suggestions from designing a box through WinISD.
I admit that the box is about twice the size I was originally planning
on, but while playing around with WinISD I discovered something that
made me trust it enough to be happy with the current dimensions. First
of all, when you enter in the information for a subwoofer, it asks for
all of the theile/small measurements; so I'm guessing that it uses most
of them in its calculations. Also, if the box gets much bigger in the
program, the frequency response curve almost collapses in on itself -
just like what would happen if the box were too big in real life. With
the current design I have a very stable curve, and since I have ample
trunk space I'm going to give it a shot.

If you want details on the T/S measurements, tell me what you want and
I'll supply it.
For all intents and purposes, it is a very nice sub.
