I have a stack of Sony DPS processors gathering dust that I'm planning
to sell in the coming weeks. (2 R7's, 2 D7's, and 1 M7) All five
units have a dead battery and revert to factory defaults upon powering
up. The batteries appear to be soldered in place, leading me to
question whether this could be a do-it-yourself sort of project or not.
(a search of the r.a.p. archives confirmed my suspicions) Has anyone
successfully replaced a battery on one of these units themselves? I
figure that a fresh battery would add to the resale value, but I don't
necessarily want to send them out to a shop for the replacement.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Travis Garrison

It's fairly easy, just rip the old battery off (hold the metal strip and
pull the battery), solder in some wires to a battery holder and you're done.

You can buy batteries with solder tabs. Is this one so unusual that
there's no longer a replacement for it?

From what I remember, the solder tab is connected on the underside of
the board. IOW it's hard to take the battery with the solder tab out.

The original poster may have read warnings about the danger of the
battery exploding if it's overheated in soldering, but that's something
that's easy to avoid with some care.

That's why I suggested using a battery holder ;-)

If you can do usual PC board work, do it yourself. You will want a
temperature-controlled iron and a solder sucker (Paladin and Soldapulit
both make good units in the $20 range). If you have never done board
rework before, get an old power supply and practice removing things for
a couple days before you touch the Sony. It's not all that hard, and
it's a good skill to have.

I like to install battery holders too, because in another ten years or
so, the battery is going to have to be replaced AGAIN and you might as
well just make it easier for yourself then. Digi-Key has a nice selection
of coin cell holders.
