Making music over the net... |
|
|
I'm looking for a way for my band to record. The problem is the bass
player lives in south carolina the singer lives in Philly and I live in
Nashville. I want some way to post 2-mixes in mp3 form for us all to
track to, then exchange all the .WAV (or whatever format) once all the
tracking is done, and do a final mix from those.
I've been googling this for about an hour and a half, and I can't find
much. I did find this: http://www.ninjam.com/jamfarm/index.php, it lets
you jam in "Real" time (actually delayed a few measures, but the delay
is synced to the beat of the song, in theory).
That isn't quite what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a service
that will manage the file exchange part, or will we have to deal with
ftp servers etc.
Thanks
AF

Sound on Sound magazine had a relevant article in their August'05
edition.
"Spreading Your Music Across Networked Computers"
The following service was mentioned there:

I can't recommend this place highly enough: http://www.yousendit.com/.
Fantastic, free, and no sign-up for anybody. |

Yeah I always use it as a backup - people I deal with prefer to get (<5MB)
audio as email attachments even though it's very inefficient - attaching
adds about 20% to its size - but there have been times when it just never
arrived so I always also use yousendit. I started using it exclusively but
one engineer told me it took longer for him to get the file this way (well
it appears longer because he has to wait for the file to download, whereas
via attachment it's already downloaded by the time he's aware it's there,
even though the actual download took longer). Also it avoids the massive
frustration I used to get on dial-up where I'd spend forever sending big
files, go out thinking the job was done & return to find they'd bounced
because of a size limit somewhere along the line.
It's advertising supported so I sent myself a few to check what kind of
advertising they were selling and whether it looked "professional". I'd
stop using it for clients if I found out they were including porn ads for
instance. It's only let me down once and then it was pretty clear the file
hadn't gone, so it's delayed my previously inevitable foray into site
hosting & posting.
I had a look at the digitalmusician site a while back which was exciting,
but has ongoing costs for bitrates above 128 IIRC.
