I am newbie to HDTV and EDTV however was wondering whether it is worth
subscribing to HDTV services for my Samsung Plasma SPR4212 EDTV. The TV has
component video so I am thinking that HDTV may bring in a better picture.

Any thoughts?

Yes, the HD TV will look much much better than SD on an ED plasma TV.
You get the full 16:9 picture for HD shows & broadcasts, the colors will
be improved, you can get 5.1 sound (if you have the receiver for it) and
you will wonder how you ever lived with SD.

I see from the Samsung website that the SP-R4212 is equipped with a
built-in ATSC digital tuner. Unless you live way out in the boondocks,
you should hook up an antenna (UHF more important that VHF for most
digital stations until 2009), and see what digital stations you can pick
up. The picture on the digital broadcast stations will look just as good
as the cable HD picture. Try www.antennaweb.org for digital stations
near you. I have Adelphia cable with HD, but I also can pick up 12
stations which broadcast some HD in the evening (6 in Washington D.C.
and 6 in Baltimore) with a UHF antenna in the attic.

Absolutely makes a difference. I have a Panasonic 42" EDTV and HDTV
content looks brilliant (hooked up via component video as well). I've
seen true HDTV on plasma and the difference is negligible for EDTV if
you're seated at a proper distance from the screen. All sports
broadcast in HDTV look awesome, as well as prime time network shows.
You're not getting much out of your plasma EDTV if you DON'T subscribe
to HDTV content.

HD looks almost as good on an ED plasma then it does on it's HD
brother. And from more than 10 feet back the difference is very
small.

The Samsung plasmas are known to have poor SD performance so if
you watch a lot of SD the Sammy is not for you. HD is pretty good,
still not as good as the Panny though.

I have a 42" Panasonic EDTV plasma from a couple of years ago. It
can accept and downsample a 720p signal from my HD receiver and
the result is _beautiful_. With an SD signal, you will have to
zoom or stretch to get a widescreen picture, and the result
will be fuzzier than a native EDTV-resolution signal (such as
a 480p movie from your DVD). I have previously told the story
of how the cable guy came in to install the digital cable
box and asked if I wanted HD: I showed him a picture from
the local PBS digital station, and he said. "Oh. That's
better than what we can give you."

Besides, you probably don't have to have more than a month's
commitment to that service?

I decided on the EDTV resolution because I expected the greater
part of my source material to be DVDs, and the matching of the
native resolution to the source resolution actually gives a better
picture for such material than would scaling the digital image up
for a higher (and, not incidentally, more expensive) resolution.
The fine picture from the HD receiver was a bonus.

Philosophical musing: I think a lot of the agony that people put
into home entertainment equipment is to please other people more
than themselves. We're all afraid that some Golden Ears is going
to come into our house and hear our stereo equipment (or just look
at the 'Bose' label!) and laugh and say, "you bought _that_ piece
of junk?" Similarly, there is a tendency to overbuy so that our
'friends' will not say, "Oh, it's not really High Definition, is
it, that's too bad." (and sometimes in my case, "What, only 42
inches?") But for most programs and most viewers, there is really
not _that_ much difference in the picture, and only someone very
experienced with comparing such things will be able to discern it
(heck, thousands if not millions of viewers are probably still
watching standard definition in zoom or stretch on their expensive
HD sets and convincing themselves that this is a wonderful HD
Experience).
