I have a 58 inch Hitachi WS HD TV. I hooked it up from my Samsung HD
receiver to
my TV with DVI. But the cable was only $35. My friendly electronics store
says this
cable is no good and I am not getting the best picture possible. They
suggest a
Monster Cable $99 cable they says has more insulation and bandwidth. Anyone
here an expert that can help me?

Thanks,
Bill

Some people swear by Monster, others say they are a waste of money.

However, with DVI, there it's pure digital, so it shouldn't matter as the
bits & bytes are either there or they are not. At least that's my
experience, and have used both Monster & "cheap" cables and haven't seen any
difference. RCA also makes DVI & HDMI cables that cost less than 1/2 of
those Monster cables.

Your experience may be different tham mine.

That's a good example of why it's often a bad idea to talk to salespeople.

Their motivation is to sell you something with a high profit margin, not
what is best for your needs. $35 is even more expensive than necessary.

$35 is a lot of money for a DVI cable. And that Monster brand cable is
exactly what the store would love to sell, but certainly NOT what you'd
want to buy.

A poor digital signal would either cause "digital tiling", where the
picture looks like a bunch of colored blocks, or no pic at all. A
monster cable at that price would be a waste of money. Thats why we all
want digital isnt it?

Hi,

I tired El Cheapo RS cable and Monster cable to see the difference. I
did not notice any difference. Either I have handicapped vision or
Monster people does. Returned Monster cable for refund.

Monster cables are fine when your running an analog signal through them. Any
higher end cable will do the trick. But, when your using DVI or HDMI there
really is no reason to go crazy and buy a $400.00 cable. I purchased a 50
foot HDMI cable from pccables or something like that for around $70.00 and
its worked out great. Even after the wife BUSTED one of the ends off of the
cable the thing still worked after I spliced in another end. That sucked
BTW.

The same crap applies to those store dudes selling you "gold" USB cables
because they are better. Thats a load of, well you know..

PC World Magazine tested cables priced from something like $15 to $200.

There was no difference in signal. You can probably find the report at their
web site.

While we're on the subject of cables, what is the consensus on the best coax
cable. I have a ton of coax inputs and the darn ends keep popping off. I can
crimp them back on all day, but it's REALLY frustrating. Are there any
recommendations for a good coax cable whose ends won't pop off?

What are you doing to your coax cables to have the ends pop off? I've

never encountered this problem in 20+ years of OTA, cable, satellite,
and cable again either with purchased cables, cables supplied by
providers or those constructed by me. Are you using a dedicated cable
crimping tool or just pliers?

From the context I think he is talking about RCA connectors, not F types.
There are very few that are meant to fit on coax. I am butting in because I
see my name quoted.

They're coax connectors. Most of them were stock cables that I've had to
re-crimp with a dedicated crimping tool. I move components around from time
to time, and some of the jacks are at an angle to the wall, leaving some
stress. I think the cables were originally crap (many from Radio Shack--the
"gold" series--yuck.) Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing the whole lot with
some quality stuff.

FYI Monster cables are not necessarily "quality stuff", just expensive
stuff. Check at Wal-Mart or the like.
