erased vhs footage...retrievable? |
|
|
Wondering if any advancement came along that I missed, where you can
get back something you erased on a VHS tape. I know the old story
about "once the magnetic strip is compromised" blah blah, but figured
at some point, something will come along that will allow us to retrieve
erased footage on a vhs tape.

I guess the only folks who could do this are the Spook Agencies and I don't
think your VHS would qualify as "National Defence"...

Erased? Bulk erased? Recorded-over? How?
Likely not anything worth the potential cost.
And likely not at all if you mean "recorded-over". |

Yeah, recorded over. I have a tape of tv stuff that only aired once
which was recorded over by accident, so the only way to get the footage
back is if somehow I could view the erased portion. If any tech.
advancements had come along where you can "retrieve" erased portions of
that sort of stuff. |

If it has been written over you could hope the tracking left a little
of the original signal but you are unlikely to recover a decent
playable image.
You could search on "data recovery" services but I think you will find
the cost is exceptionably high. |

If you recorded over it, there is not a thing left of the first program.
The record magnetic field is strong enough to remove every domain of the
first recording.

I think should try posting to groups where someone may have recorded it
too. What was on the tape? Can you contact the station?

The short answer is NO.
When you erase (record over) a tape you are replacing content A with
content B. Content A no longer exists to recover. There is nothing
left of content A to "retrieve".
Erasing a video tape should not be confused with "deleting" files on
your hard disk. Deleting files ALLOWS the replacement of content A
with content B but does not necessarily do so immediately as it would
on a rerecorded video tape. So if not too much time has passed you can
recover all or part of a "deleted" file on a hard disk. |

Thanks for the replies. I only ask because I had deleted some files
from a dvd+rw but when I went to play the disc on the computer I went
through a VTS format and the files I had deleted were still there. |
