In the manual, Canon shows a histogram of an image. Either I'm
completely missing the obvious, or there isn't an explanation of how
to access the histogram display. Can someone either tell me I'm blind
or at least point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

There should be a DISP or DISPLAY or similar button on the back of the
camera. Pushing that will cycle through the display modes, including
modes which show the histogram. I think the S2IS supports a live
histogram, so this should work both in capture mode and in review
(playback) mode.

Many thanks, that was it. Although I couldn't find a way to see this
in 'live' mode, only in playback.

...snip...
Images play back in the LCD monitor when the LCD monitor is opened.
Images play back in the viewfinder when the LCD monitor is closed.

You can change the "No Information" and "Detailed Information" view
modes while reviewing an image right after shooting.

Another thing: The histogram only shows when you're fully "zoomed out" in
playback mode. i.e. if you zoom in to show only part of the picture, the
histogram is not shown, even in "detailed information" mode.
