Powered mixer for rental/hire stock |
|
|
Looking for a simple 6-8 channel powered mixer with cheesy onboard
effects and 7 band (or so) graphics. Our 20+ year old EV100M's are well
overdue for retirement. We tried the Soundcraft Spirit 600, but it only
survived about 2 years. We didn't like it much anyway, as their idea of
output protection was to mute the outputs every time the amp clipped.
People would turn it up a little then call and say it was intermittent.
Quite annoying.
Ease of operation and extraordinary durability are the two
prerequisites. Any ideas???
Thanks in advance.

Dynacord Powermate series
http://www.dynacord.com/unterkategorie_e.php?id=56&subid=106
Built like a tank and sounds better than the Soundcraft things..
The only drawback is the price wich is higher than a similar Powerstation..

You can try a Yorkville MicroMix series (replacing their MP-series)
http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=31&cat=13
I can't say that I have tried this newer series before, but the
Student's Association has a couple of the older MP8's for easy public
speaking gigs. They work quite well, and fit all the features that you
need. This new series even has Speakon out.
You already know about the great Yorkville warrantee... |

Yamaha EMX 5000-12 Retails for less than the Soundcraft, Two good reverbs,
2x500watts at 4 ohm (2x325 watts at 8 ohm) so it's got more power than most
in it's class....... If the reverb unit doesn't matter you should check out
Alto and Behringer.... Good mixer/amps in their price range.......

Thanks for all the input. Dynacord looks pretty cool. Any experience
with the lid failing or does it seem pretty durable?. Gigrac looks
perfect for price/performance, but the powerstation left a bad taste and
I doubt the powers that be will be swayed. The Yamaha seems the most
common, but a case must be figured in to the cost. Perhaps one of the
other EX series? Yorkville is functional, but a little bulky and would
need a very odd case.
Thanks again!

The lid is made from sheet steel and seems pretty solid.. A flightcase
would be better, but I see a lot of ballroom bands just using the lid and
having no problems with that..
Btw: The powermate series were available badged as EV at some point too, but
I cant find them on their new website. They are built at the Dynacord
facility in Germany - the same place they build EVs line of poweramps..
I have used the powermate series for rentals for 3-4 years with zero
problems except for clients muting the poweramp by accident ( "standby"
switch located just above the master faders mutes the poweramp outputs and
is really easy to miss when searching for the cause of "no sound" :-)

I've used my 10yr old Spirit powerstation 600 for years but would never
pick it for an idiot proof rental. Also I had the muting upon clipping
with low line voltage circuit problem fixed . Now it works as expected
for a non limiter equiped amp. I really like mine better than Mackie
Yamaha Peavey or yorkville units from that period
Other rugid rental appropriate idiot proof heads
Peavey
Yorkville
Mackie

I second the Dynacord Powermate series. Yes, you will pay a little more but
you gain the quality. Superb.

I have to say my 8 year old Yamaha EMX 640 has never failed at all...I
regularly put it out in the hands of those who have no knowledge of
sound system operation (or even worse...those who *think* that they
DO!) and it's been totally reliable. It's been used indoors and
outdoors (even on beaches for several events...never had one problem
with it. I'd definitely look at any of their EMX series...and while I
like the EMX 5000 I'd probably opt for one of the more traditional head
units for idiot-proofing the opration (less openings for things to get
into since they don't use sliders for channel gain).
