I was annoyed trying to watch fine old films on a widescreen set,too.
============================
Why?
This does not make sense.
There is no problem with 4:3 nor 2.35:1 with a WS set.

It's not really a problem, but:
On our Philips 34pw9815 widescreen, if I use black sidebars then
there'll be the typical soul-searching regarding burn-in. [Gray
sidebars do not seem
to be an available option].
Or,
If I expand the 4:3 picture to fill the whole screen, then I lose a little
of the picture on the top and bottom.
A "stretch" mode [on the extreme sides] for 4:3 is not available.
The new 4:3 set fits the bill in this case nicely.
