Tivo still listening! |
|
|
Well, remember all those posts we've bantered about concerning 1-5
minute conflicts at the beginning or ending of shows causing missed
recordings? Seems someone at Tivo was paying attention! From a Tivo
e-mail:
----
New TiVoŽ service feature!
Get 'em both with Overlap Protection: In the past, if two of your
favorite shows overlapped by a minute or two, you could only record one
or the other. Now, with Overlap Protection, your TiVoŽ box can record
both shows back-to-back by clipping just enough from the end of the
first show or the beginning of the second show, based on which has the
higher Season Pass priority in Season Pass Manager. Wondering how to
manage your Season Pass Manager? Read the next TiVo Tip.
TiVoŽ Tip: Making Priorities
While Overlap Protection ensures you'll get both your "super-sized"
show and your proverbial cola when two favorite programs air
back-to-back, you still need to decide which of the two shows gets the
slimming. The TiVoŽ service will turn to your Season Pass Manager list
for the answer. Since your scheduled recordings are prioritized in the
order in which they were set up (the first having highest priority),
regularly review your Season Pass Manager list to make sure it's to your
liking. Here's how:
From TiVo Central, select "Pick Programs to Record," then "Season Pass
Manager."
Use the arrow buttons on your remote to re-order the list as desired.
The shows you prioritize first will record the extra time.
-----
This has to be one of the most requested "fixes" talked about here.
Short of adding another tuner, this is about the best solution they
could offer. I'm impressed.

Let us know when Overlap Protection is added to Series1 TiVos and
the DirecTV DVR with TiVo. People who have DVRs with two tuners
also suffer that problem. Is TiVo collecting monthly fees from
Series1 users?

I doubt they are updating S1 software anymore (other than for perhaps
absolutely necessary minor stuff, like DST changes), so I wouldn't
expect an update. I agree that dual tuners could use the update, but I
also wouldn't expect to see an update on Directivo models, Directv
probably isn't interested in making them any more attractive then they
are right now so they can push their own boxes.
BTW, can someone post the original newsletter, or the promotional offer
portion of it? I accidentally deleted it, and I wanted to forward the
portion about the $150 rebate + 3 free months of service to someone.

No, that doesn't include the 3 free months. The new promotion doesn't
start until Nov. 9th.

If System Info shows version 7.2.1 you have the required update |

Well, since it coems with software version 7.2.1, I guess the 'indication
that this feature has been installed' would be checking what version of
software you have. As for which one takes priority, as clearly explained
on TiVo's site, the higher priority as listed in the Season Pass Manager
gets it.

Once you get 7.2.1, make sure Commander in Chief is listed higher in the SP
Manager than Law & Order SVU, and you're good to go.

From how I read it, if the end padded show is higher priority it will
still get it's padding, but now the second show will be recorded, rather
than discarded, just without the padding (which you can watch on the end
of the first show).
If the second show is higher priority, it will cut off the padding of
the first show, resulting in *exactly* what you want.

You should also see a new option under Recording options for Overlap
protection (where the suggestions option is).

Well, he'll get both either way, but if L&O is higher he'd lose the last
minute of CIC, rather than the first minute of L&O, so I'd say your
suggestion is the better option.
Folks will probably want to do some reordering of their season passes
once they get 7.2.1. Instead of ordering them by which ones you want to
ensure to record, you should order them by which ones you want to record
in *entirety*. Most will probably not change, but there may be some
shows that are back to back with a small overlap where you want the
first show to finish at the expense of the second, even though the
second show is more important to you.

Well, as others have said, the System Information screen will reflect
7.2.1 and you'll have the new menu. But the first way you'll notice
is that you'll have a Pre-TiVo Central Message telling you you've been
updated and announcing the new feature. Basically, the next time you
go into TiVo Central after the reboot you'll first get a PTCM to read
that you have to dismiss to get to TC. There will also be a normal
style message in the Messages menu to read and delete.

Unlikely, it is still in slow rollout and the floodgates haven't been
opened yet. It is *possible*, but most likely we're still a week or
two from the big push. They always ramp up gradually to make sure
there is no hidden issue - better to catch something and stop the
rollout after a few thousand than dump it on over a million machines
and have it blow up then.

This is the information I wanted about how you know you have it and control
it. Both my TiVos are sitting at 7.2.0-oth.... I hope they are pushing this
upgrade out quickly. Otherwise, it's back to programming the old VCR as well. |
