Has it been buried by all it's competitors yet?
Just wondering.

It is still going strong Sean, better than ever. Still adding
features to the software and working on new hardware.
You've been absent lately, you going to come around to troll some more
and keep things interesting?

That "big contract" is like many Tivo press releases. I believe the deal
says that various Comcast branches can offer a Tivo service if they want
to, or not if they don't. And anybody can walk away whenever they want. |

and your url for that unique interpretation?

Don't tell me about Tivo's latest "press release", tell me when
something happens.
I promise to post the minute Comcast mails me a Tivo offer. |

Really? If Comcast picks up the ability to record two shows at once AND uses
the TiVo interface I'll be saying by-by to DTV.

From what I've been told by a Comcast insider there is no current plan to |
roll out Tivo anything to former AT&T customers due to their contractual
obligations with Motorola (damn lawyers). It's not clear what the other
Comcast customers can expect.
From personal experience, I'd advise anyone thinking of ditching DTV for
Comcast to think long and hard about it prior to making that switch. I've
tried Comcast and Dish Network and have been disappointed with both - not
just because their DVR's are inferior to DirecTivo's.
Comcast's half analog/half digital signal is a waste if you have a
higher-end TV or monitor to watch on. Frequent signal dropouts only add to
the frustration with the experience.
When I last tried Dish Network earlier this year my biggest gripes were
price for the channel offering, and inferior equipment. Simply put, you'll
pay more money for less channels and equipment. I also seem to recall some
issues with them keeping channels in their lineup due to contractual
disputes (Comcast has this problem too).
Bottom line, DTV is still the best bang for buck around if you do your
homework. A call to the retention dept. consistently gets you more value
than anybody else will offer. The only downside to DTV/Tivo is that you
*need* to put out some cash for the HD DVR. I have a feeling this will
change as time goes on though. |

Are you saying that Comcast plans to offer TiVo only to former AT&T
Broadband subscribers, or only to everyone else?

I defected from Comcast to DirecTV for several reasons, most of which
no longer apply:
1. My local Comcast system offered only analog retransmissions of my
local television stations, and the video quality was nothing short of
pathetic. Subsequently, the digital (HD, when available) versions
were added to the lineup.
2. My local Comcast system dropped TechTV, which DirecTV continued to
carry. Unfortunately, Comcast managed to take TechTV away yet again
-- this time by purchasing the channel and basically shutting it down.
3. My local Comcast system never carried Trio, and DirecTV did.
DirecTV dropped Trio at the end of last year.
4. My local Comcast system offered no DVR of any kind. Obviously, it
now offers dual-tuner, HD-compatible DVRs (which aren't anywhere near
as good as TiVo, but probably are comparable to DirecTV's NDS units).
If DirecTV forces me to give up my TiVo boxes, the only remaining
advantage will be my grandfathered qualification for reception of the
Los Angeles ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC stations (in addition to the
complete New York City package). In any event, this probably will
expire in 2009.
If my local Comcast system (formerly Adelphia, not AT&T Broadband)
adopts TiVo, I'll be extremely tempted to switch back. Another
possibility is the eventual availability of a CableCARD-based TiVo
model.
| Quote: | Comcast's half analog/half digital signal is a waste if you have a

|
The majority of my television viewing is of broadcast programming (all
available digitally). The remainder is comprised of premium channels
(also digital), other digital-tier channels, and a few channels for
which the picture quality isn't particularly important.
Also, I've heard that my local Comcast system and many other cable
systems are planning to convert to all-digital signals in the
not-too-distant future (except for analog simulcasts of local
stations). This should free up a considerable amount of bandwidth,
thereby resulting in reduced compression and/or the availability of
additional content (particularly HD content).

In your area, perhaps, but not around here.

Indeed, it will; DirecTV/TiVo recorders will become unavailable. |

There will always be EBay. With hundreds of thousands of units out there,
you'll probably always be able to find one that works.

1. At the present time, we don't know whether DirecTV will continue to
support TiVo-based DirecTV DVRs beyond the expiration of the current
service agreement (in early 2007).
2. Model HR10-250 (the DirecTV HD DVR) will be rendered obsolete by
the introduction of MPEG-4/Ka-band HD content delivery (which already
has begun). HD feeds of top-market local stations will be offered in
this manner, eventually followed by national HD channels. An
equipment swap-out (for an upcoming NDS-based HD DVR) is planned for
mid-2006, with the discontinuation of MPEG-2/Ku-band HD content
delivery expected to occur at some point in the not-too-distant
future. |
