Wizard of Oz: Toto's Fate. |
|
|
I just finished watching the 2005 DVD version of _The Wizard of Oz_.
Actually, it might be a 2006 model, what with the October release date and
all. It's definitely longer, lower -- wider too!
"Oh, but anyway, Toto, we're home! Home! And this is my room -- and you're
all here! And I'm not going to leave here ever, ever again, because I love
you all! And -- Oh, Auntie Em -- there's no place like home!"
OK. Auntie Em, Uncle Henry, Professor Marvel, Toto and the three shiftless
farmhands have all survived the cyclone. The farm also seems to be
relatively intact. The story ends and everyone lives happily ever after.
But what about Almira Gulch and the sheriff's order to have Toto destroyed?
That's all I gotta say...

Uh...and how healthy would YOU be after riding a bicycle in a cyclone?

Heh! Good point, one I've seen mentioned before- Dorothy ends the story
with a greater appreciation of her home, but the central problem
remained unsolved. Maybe Aunt Em finally snapped and went medieval on
Miss Gulch after all? |

I never really believed she had a proper warrant, if you wait for the HD
release you'll probably be able to zoom in on the document and see if it's a
real legal dog-destruction-order. |

Almira Gulch deserves some sympathy here. After all, Toto ransacked her
garden, crapped in her yard, pissed on her petunias and chased her cat --
once or twice a week. On top of that, Toto bit Miss Gulch on her leg and
left her nearly lame.

It's already been done. The new version has an HD-ready master. It's
just a matter of waiting for the right time/format to release it.
|
Even now, the current master's clear-definition enough to point out the
African crane wandering around the apple-tree/Tin Man set, and lets
purists and film buffs finally slap those urban-legend "Hey, I heard a
Munchkin hung himself!" idiots in the head...

Actually, in the sequel we see how this problem is solved. The 3 farm
hands give it to Miss Gulch "Toto-style" in return for her having the
order cancelled. |

The book wasn't much help. By the end of page 3, Dorothy was caught up in
the cyclone. There was no Miss Gulch and there were no farmhands.
The scenario you have revealed appears to have been set up in the original
movie script. Here are the opinions held by the farm hands -- one of which
was deleted from the final version:
HUNK
Now lookit, Dorothy, you ain't using your
head about Miss Gulch. Think you didn't
have any brains at all.
DOROTHY
I have so got brains.
HUNK
Well, why don't you use them? When you come
home, don't go by Miss Gulch's place. Then
Toto won't get in her garden, and you won't
get in no trouble. See?
HICKORY
Oh! Oh, it feels like my joints are rusted.
Listen, Dorothy, don't let Hunk kid you
about Miss Gulch. She's just a poor
sour-faced old maid that -- she ain't got
no heart left. You know, you should have a
little more heart yourself, and have pity
on her.
ZEKE
Listen, kid, are you going to let that old Gulch
heifer try and buffalo you? She ain't nothing to
be afraid of. Have a little courage, that's all.
So, they all knew Miss Gulch and, from what you've said, the all had the
hots for her -- and she for them.
We also find out why Dorothy was living with Uncle Henry and Aunt Em:
UNCLE HENRY
Poor little orphan, and her Miss Gulch
troubles. Gosh all hemlock - you know, she
ought to have somebody to play with.
AUNT EM
I know, but we all got to work out our own
problems, Henry.

Also deleted was Hickory building his own "anti-cyclone" invention--
Which explains, if anyone wonders, why they were sure to "erect a statue
to him in this town someday"...

Yeah. You'd think that if they were going to delete a scene, they would
remove all references to it:
AUNT EM
I saw you tinkering with that contraption,
Hickory. Now, you and Hunk get back to that
wagon!
Of course the contraption was a cyclone buster:
HICKORY
Now look, here's something that really has
a heart. This is the best invention I ever
invented.
DOROTHY
This?
HICKORY
Sure. It's to break up winds, so we don't
have no more dust storms. Can you imagine
what it'll mean to this section of the
country? I'll show you. It works perfectly
now. Here's the principle. You see that fan
-- that sends up air currents into the sky.
These air currents -- Oh, stop it!
DOROTHY
Oh!
HICKORY
All right, Mrs. Gale. But some day they're
going to erect a statue to me in this town,
and --
And of course, the deleted Jitterbug scene, to which the Wicked Witch of the
West refers when she mentions the little _insect_:
WITCH
(laughs)
You'll believe in more than that before
I've finished with you. Take your army to
the Haunted Forest, and bring me that girl
and her dog! Do what you like with the
others, but I want her alive and unharmed!
They'll give you no trouble, I promise you
that. I've sent a little insect on ahead
to take the fight out of them. Take special
care of those ruby slippers. I want those
most of all. Now, fly! Fly! Bring me that
girl and her slippers! Fly! Fly! Fly!

This is a real tragedy. Early studio heads decide that a movie is too long
(whatever that means) or that a certain scene is not appropriate
(censorship) or stops the film's forward momentum, and a lot of fascinating
material is taken out of a movie. This wouldn't be so bad if the original
film hadn't been destroyed.
As a result, _The Wizard of Oz_ is missing Hickory's cyclone buster, lots of
snipped Wicked Witch of the West dialog, The Jitterbug scene and The
Triumphal Return march into Oz, among other things.
_King Kong_ suffered the same fate, but most of the censored footage was
still available in one form or another. However, the Spider scene appears to
have been lost forever. Yet, Warner has included _The Mystery of the Lost
Spider Pit Sequence_ in the bonus material:
*** Featurette 2: "The Mystery of the Spider Sequence" (approx. 15 mins) -
This piece is a documentary in three parts that leads up to the 25-second
recreation as a pay-off. The first part covers the legend of the Spider
Sequence, how it supposedly appeared in the original cut of the film (Ray
Bradbury saw it as a child), how it was edited out, lost for decades,
rumored to exist and sought by fans and historians alike. The second part is
Peter Jackson and his team taking on the job of recreating it (interviews,
etc.), Weta studying the only existing photos to build the spiders and
miniature environments, the NZ Miniatures Dept. shooting the sets and
skilled stop-motion animators bringing the creatures to life. Finally, the
third section and pay-off is the recreation cut together with sound effects
and Max Steiner music.***

The Region 4 version of _King Kong_ has been delayed indefinitely. I hope
that this doesn't happen to the Region 1 version. Warner is notorious for
DVD delays:
