6.1, around 80w per channel, around $600 range, all thoughts relevant
to this are welcome, thank you.

Speakers and sub to be determined but leaning towards dali's, richter,
possibly even yamaha's (which would then make sense to go yamaha
receiver)

I'm looking at the receiver to start from as naturally it will be the
powerhouse for speakers, connection will be rca's and optical/coax from
dvd/sacd player and dvd recorder.
Around 600 leaves room for negotiation up or down, using it as starting
point.
Previoos experience is Denon and Yamaha.

Your price point limits you in your selection.
Sony is an obvious choice, but if you can find a Yamaha, Denon,
Marantz, Harmon Kardon, Onkyo, etc. you'd probably be better off in
terms of sound quality.

What do you want to connect (and what type of connections)
Waht speakers are you powering? Sub?

I've heard the Panasonic SA-XR55 is getting great reviews. Second post
in this thread says it can be got for $660:

That is'nt much budget, SONY, PIONEER, are not in the same class as
ONKYO DENON or YAMAHA, or receivers others will mention. Then once you
own a QUALITY AMP,time to think about the speakers!

Probably Yamaha would be worth a look. I have a Marantz (Sr4500) Amp,

and a older prologic Yamaha (RX-V480). Whilst the Yammy is nice, it
isn't really in the same league. I got the Marantz for $750 brand new,
that was pretty close to cost mind you. RRP is $999. Worth every penny.
It is 80w and 7.1, their basic model.
It has got me back into hifi now. I would recommend anything by Marantz.
IIRC Denon and Marantz are in bed together now, so they could also be
worth checking out. Sony I have never been big on.
On your budget I would probably look at Yamaha. Best advice is go and
have a listen;-). Also think (and listen) carefully, about the speakers
you intend to use, probably more important than the amp itself.

No, it wouldn't make sense. Buy the speakers that sound the best.
Matching
speaker manufacturers with the receiver's will provide no benefit. In
fact,
I'd steer clear of speakers made by receiver makers like sony, yamaha,
etc.

Yamaha's history is in music, not bikes etc, why do you think their
logo is three tuning forks? 8-)

Their speakers do vary, like many manufacturers that do electronics,
but they have a package set, floorstanders eg are around 3 1/2 tall,
they're bloody good.

As I am a musical person, some good musical speakers would be nice, if
I won lotto I'd go VAF for the combination of HT/music.

Folks, a big thanks to all for your courtesy and considerations.

Double your budget and get a Philips DFR9000.

I bargained HN down from $1300 to $1100.
