Streamclip and DIVA are 2 which I use, but neither is really complete in any
way for editing or authoring. They both are mostly useful as transcoders /
file converters.

Since iMovie and iDVD are free with the Macintosh, and both work superbly
well (including high definition HDV editing at no charge!!) my opinion is
that there is no need whatsoever for the amateur to buy any video software
whatsoever with the Macintosh.

If, on the other hand, you want to do advanced work, then FCP Express is
extremely low cost, especially considering what it does, and the full blown
Final Cut Pro Studio HD is also a good value for true professional use.

My first editing of HDV video was, in fact, using a MacMini and iMovie HD.
The software AND THE COMPUTER cost $499!

We do use real tools on both Windows and Mac. But one of our clients
raised this question and just didn't want to put off his DIY sprit.
