Satellite to VCR connections. |
|
|
I own a JVC HM-DH30000 digital vhs VCR. A wonderful thing!
However, while it can record HD signals, its only digital input is a
firewire connection.
I am considering purchasing a Bell Expressvu HD satellite receiver,
(materially the same as a Dish Network rig) model 6100.
However, its only apparent digital output is a DVI socket.
Is there any way to convert to DVI output to feed the VCR digitally. It
seems a shame to have to use baseband video to connect these items.
Any ideas? Obviously apart from capturing clean digital signals, I am hoping
to include the Dolby Digital sound as well.

I'm not aware of any reasonably priced DVI to firewire converter. For the
signal to be recorded by D-VHS it has to be properly coded MPEG2 TS (transport
stream). As a matter of fact for past few weeks I'm trying to record HD MPEG2
from my computer to JVC-4000 and so far can't do it. I have no problem
capturing HD signal from the tape to computer and I can watch it on my computer
but can't record the same signal back to tape. I think you have 2 options: get
HD satt. receiver with firewire output or forget about recording HD on JVC
deck. I like my D-VHS a lot also and hope it will hold me over until Blue laser
DVD shows up in US at reasonable prices and the format war has only one guy
standing (seems like 2 competing formats will be released: HD-DVD and Blue
Ray). That means I don't consider any HD cable or Satt. box unless it has
working firewire. I think there is some FCC law requiring service providers to
offer at least some equipment with firewire to consumers. I know it sucks that
some companies offer very little support for firewire especially that it is
only viable option to record digital signals. As far as I know DVI signal is
uncompressed video and it would have to be compressed again to be usefull for
any kind of recording. |

What really sucks is the DVDs that you can rent of a video club.More
scratches than atoms of the universe each.A 25 year old VHS tape though (Lui
de Funes from the early 80s) plays as new (with a little distortion at the
beginning). The sound is crystal-clear, and the colours with contrast and
saturation.I unsubscribed from the video club, because I think they won't
let me the old tapes to force me rent dvds and new tapes (1.5 euro a day)
while old tapes 1 euro a week.Every time I see a dvd playing, I think
myself:"Man, that sucks".All people having the same complexion.

A company called 169time can modify some Bell Expressvu HD satellite
receivers adding a firewire port. When used with 169time software and
a mini PC called the AVX-1, HD recording to D-VHS using your
HM-DH30000U can be accomplished. I am using 169time modified DirecTV
receivers and the results are very good.
