i am using liteon dvd writer LDW-401S...it was working preferly when i first
install, and i've done around 10-20 DVD burning without problem,
i didn't use it for a long time... but recently, when i try to backup some
files...
i notice it can't read or write any DVD Disc... but i does allows me to read
and write CDR..
any idea ?

that's what surprises me...
any idea on how to resolve this ?

I have been through 3 Lite-On CD-RW/DVD drives under warranty with my
computer. After a few months they just couldn't read DVDs, although the
CD-RW part still worked.

I gave up on Lite-On and bought the LG 4167 from www.newegg.com and am very
happy.

Time to replace it with a Pioneer.

Try updating the firmware, or clean the laser.

Try this as a test:

If using XP anyway.

When you first boot up windows go to file explorer.
See if it lists the drive as RW.

then...

Put in a good recorded DVD and see if Explorer changes the listing
from DVD-RW to CD-Rom or CD-RW. If so, you know the DVD laser has
gone south on you. This is because the laser unit is actually two
independent devices and one can fail while the other will continue to
be usable.

Windows can only read the firmware listing and really dosen't know the
DVD part has failed until you try to use it.

Give it a try and let me know.

The Lite_on was being replaced repeatedly, under warranty...after the 3rd
unit went bad...I just bought the newer, faster, LG 4167 from Newegg...only
$44 as I recall, and it works great.

No more Lite-On products for me!

As another poster replied, the DVD laser was going out on the Lite-On, but
the CD part was fine.

He told you to use file explorer (Windows Explorer).

Your DVD laser is dead ... buy a new drive.
