OTA multi-directional antenna...what to get? |
|
|
as some of you know, hurricane wilma caused some major problems to us
here in south florida, and my house suffered some damage...one of the
casualties was my HDTV antenna which I had on the roof, which was an
RCA ANT711:
Anyways, I spent the whole day installing two antennas from Channel
master: the 3018, and the 3020:

Niether of these worked as good as my old antenna, because they were
not able to get the West Palm beach channels...my guess is that this
has to do with the fact that they are directional.
Now, here is a pic of what my location is like...as you can see, I need
to get some channels to my south-southeast, and some to my
north-northeast......thus, I need an antenna that will be able to pick
those up:

My question is then, what antenna should I get? At worst, I will just
get another RCA to replace the one I had, but the problem is that it is
made of plastic, and it wasn't very sturdy...it would also be
intermitent in strong winds and heavy rain. I know I need a
multidirectional antenna, so I don't know what to do, or what to
get....
ps- the max distance is 33.5 miles to the north-northeast

Why not get two directional antennas? You could get a bigger one in the
direction of the more distant stations (I guess that being N-NE).

You may want to hold off judgment on your new antenna. Shortly after the
hurricane Wilma, there were very few digital channels on the air; but they
have been gradually returning. WXEL-DT, as an example, channel 27 in West
Palm (the best current PBS HDTV channel in SE Florida) has not returned yet.
There are others also, I haven't had time to compile a list. |

I also live in south Florida. I use a Radio Shack UHF/VHF antenna with an |
antenna rotator. The advantage of using one antenna is that you don't need
to use a signal combiner (hooking two antennas together without a combiner
will change the impedance and cause signal loss). |
