talkback system |

Hi guy's,
anybody got any ideas about making or modifying anything to make a talk
back system as I'm just starting to get some simple work but need to talk to
my camera operators.

Many people have built these...

I've never received any email about this from Antarctica,
but folks on the remaining continents (and a few islands)
have written to me. |

Richard's system is far more elegant --- and it looks like it will take a
feed from program audio
another cheepo idea is to use a set of those $50 walkie talkie sets that are
sold everywhere like Costco or Wallmart
have your shooters clip these on their belts and use an earphone --- and
you're golden!

Yes, it will. And it an be modified in practically infinite
ways to do whatever is needed.

We tried that. We found three major problems...
1. The noise (mostly hiss, but also some distortion) was pretty
bad and made intelligibility a problem in noisy venues.
2. The VOX mode had enough of a delay that lots of times
the camera number the director was addressing was lost,
and they could never remember to use the manual PTT.
3. In any kind of more populated urban area, it was hard
to find a free channel that could be used reliably for a
long-form (>30 minutes) production.
4. (bonus) The units we found were pretty flimsy and
unreliable. Maybe there are better ones today? |

PortaComs are cheap and good. All you need is lots of XLR cable. Look
'em up in Markertek or Comprehensive. |
