I have a WMV file which I would like to burn onto a DVD and view in an
ordinary DVD player. Is this possible?

I can't view the file on my DVD player so I guess I have to convert it
somehow.

go to www.videohelp.com and type in wmv to dvd...in the search function

I think you have to convert the WMV file to the DVD format first ,then
burn it to DVD to
be compatible with your DVD Player.
You can can attempt to use the converter tool WinAVI Video Converter

Nero will burn WMV files onto a DVD. Mine did that is - several times.
