OK, my current setup is a Pioneer DEH-P4400, which I discovered (quite
naievely) today has but one pre-out which is currently output an 8" Bazooka
passive sub in my Accord's trunk (I know, I know; at the time it seemed
like a good idea) bridged on the A channel of my Pioneer GM-X364 (4 ch.
input, 2 output), with Ch. B powering my front 6.5" 2-ways, and the head
unit powering the 6x9s on the rear deck (whew!). I'd like to replace the
Bazooka with the Infinity Basslink. Do I need to: a) get a better H/U, i.e,
with more pre-outs, and b) will my current amp handle the fronts and rears
and take the Basslink too? Sorry for the long post, and I'm obliged to
anyone who can help. TIA.

You can run all that off your current head unit, but you will not have any
control
except balance. No front to back (fader) and no sub control
you would be better off getting a unit with front, rear and sub pre-amp
outputs.
With this you will have balance, fader, and sub control.
These units usually have built in x-overs also

Right, I was looking at the Alpine CDA-9851 or the Pioneer DEH-P7700, both
of which have enough preouts to run it all. One question: the preouts of
both these units are rated at 2.2 and 2 volts, respectively. I know other
H/U have them at 4 volts. Is this a big deal?

Not a big deal at all. With all else being equal, the only difference
between 2V and 4V preouts is a *theoretical* 3dB increase in the
signal-to-noise ratio, and the SNR of any modern deck is already so
high that you wouldn't be able to detect a 3 dB difference.

Excellent. *That's* the kind of info I can use!

Actually that is an option.
Most passive Eq's have a front, rear, and a Sub out.
But as for me, I would put my money into a new head unit 1st

just so you, most of us have agreed to ignore bob wald, he's a pest and
we're hoping he'll go away soon, also beware any advice he gives you that
someone else won't back up.

I take all advice with a grain of salt. Most of it is worth exactly what you
pay for it.. Experience? Ah, now there's a useful thing.

Bob's advice is worth even less than we pay for it, if you listened to him,
it'd cost you money.
