Hello All,

I'm looking for a good condenser to use for overheads or as a hi hat mic in
a live setting. I found an SM81 in excellent condition for $235. Deal? I've
been using an AKG 452 but I am going to a different band and the mic stays
with its owner.

Thanks

Not a great deal unless it's new w/warranty, and even then...

I think you could find something better in that price range, or something as
good as the 81 for less. Think Oktava 012, Crown CM700. I'm selling my AKG
451 for $295, but that might be over your budget. Some of the
Audio-Technicas might work for you, too. I have some AT4031's that are
BRIGHT but good for OH/HH.

I'm not knocking the 81. But IMO for $235 you can do better.

I don't consider overheads and high hat to be the same job. Overheads need
to cover a wide field, where a high hat mic needs to isolate better. Small
diaphram condensers are best for overheads, but I prefer electrets for high
hat.

IMO different rooms/bands/kits call for different overheads, and there is a
freakishly wide assortment of characteristics to address and plenty of mic
response types to choose from. The first thing I consider is how much the
cymbals have to cut through the mix, and how much the cymbals and room are
going to help or hurt. In your budget range, Oktava MC012's are very
neutral, so a good place to start. If you need something silkier, try Rode
NT5's, beyond that you're looking at big bucks. More aggressive, AT4041's,
beyond that you need something pretty trashy, so any cheap pos is worth a
shot. Trashiest OH mic ever -> AKG C1000S

Can't help much with the high hat mics, I don't care for them or tend to use
them, but the last thing I want is a lot of snare and crash coming through.
I'd sooner use an SM57 than a SM81. But if I were to take it seriously the
first thing I'd try is an Audix ADX-90 clamped to a nearby piece of
hardware. No doubt folks around here have tried-and-true recommendations,
but I've never heard anything about clip-on electrets used on hats, seems
promising and certainly tidier.

For what it`s worth, I use either a Rode NT3 or an SM94 on hats. The

Rode gives a more 'explosive' sound

I wonder if the new Behringer C2 condensor mikes will be any good, they
sound a bit too good to be true at £40 a pair!

Not a great deal unless it's new w/warranty,

Net on one is about $600, so its NOT a unreasonable deal for
one. Its still way under dealer sheet on a new one.
