Anyone know of any unpowered mixers with effects, maybe at least 8/2
in/out, in the $300 or less range?

I keep getting indications that Behringer is to be steered away from.

Behringers are OK.

The inbuilt effects are nothing special though.

At a budget of <$300, you only have enough fuel to reach a handful of
destinations, of which behringer is is no doubt the option to steer
toward. To avoid behringer, you'll need more fuel.

In that price range, Behringer is the best of the lot.

Not. Take a look at the Behringer MX1804-FX. This fits your needs.

This is a job for a google newsgroup search. This has been discussed to
death. There are some people who have some problems with Behringer as a
company due to past behavior. It appears they have put that way behind
them. They also had some reliability problems in the past, which also
appear to be behind them.

Either way, if you do a google search, you'll see that both sides have
been well represented in these discussions. If you'd like a more
objective view, someone named "george perfect" posted a summary based on
his opinion. For a different view, scott dorsey posted about his
experience with a behringer copy. Take the opinions with a grain of
salt, but it will help you determine what the fuss is all about.

I'll cast a vote for the Behringer mixers. The effects processor sounds
cheezy though, but the rest works well, sounds clean of the ones we have
here, zero have developed any problems in 3 years' use.

Avoid Carvins. We've had numerous power supply failures with Carvins.

Personal opinion: Effects aren't a mixer's job. Get a mixer that works
well as a mixer, add a digital reverb box (cheap these days) which is
the only effect that I'd say _should_ be part of a basic live-sound kit,
and call it good.

Behringer is the best bang for the buck you will get and the customer
service is second to none. Those people that tell you to avoid Behringer do
not know what they are talking about.

That would be sound department personnel at a couple of different Guitar
Center stores who see what comes back.

No. Guitar Centre staff see which manufacturer's wholesale price allows
them the greatest profit. You'll find that "technical" advice at muso shops
tends to be based on that.

Or rather sound department personnel at a couple of different Guitar Centre
stores who don't get as much commission on Behringer so try to sell you
something else.

Actually the people to ask are those who actually ship their returns. It's
not hard to find out, and they have no reason not to tell you how many
parcels are going where. Keep in mind the proportions also depend on the
ratio of brands being sold.

Total noisy crap compared to my Mackies...almost ruined my project with my
sound crew using them outside at night. Cold and Damp are enemies of all
sound gear but the Behringer just hummed and buzzed on! The Mackie however
saved the day. Same environment, same mics, same cables, no noise. Now maybe
the 3 units the sound crew had were all from some bad batch but I doubt it.
