ALERT! My earphone adapter-BROKE IN HALF |
|
|
I have what I thought...was an expensive gold plated standard earphone
plug to mini-plug adapter.
I was testing some older stuff for sale and it broke in half upon
removal. I was very lucky that it totally came out of the unit before
the pieces landed in my hand. Was I shocked! I pulled it with my
finger tips ..I am confidant the side torque was miniscule.
The insulator (second ring in) is where it broke.
Any tips on a GOOD brand to replace it with?
All but one of my earphones are using mini-plugs. Especially my handy,
revered infra-red wireless SONY TMR-IF5...low noise if the volume is
set low.

This is typical. Basically, if it has a mini plug on it, it's going to
break. Those things are total disasters.

If Switchcraft makes one, it'll probably be less likely to break than
most. But if you want reliability, you are better off avoiding the
mini plug altogether.
And always get twice as many adaptors as you think you'll need, because
a lot of them will break.

So, chop it off and solder on a quarter phone. It's a pain soldering to
that tinsel wire, but you'll be happier in the long run.

Mini plugs are the worst type of low-end consumer crap.
You're lucky it didn't fall apart the moment you looked at tit.
Such stuff isn't *pro* btw. *even if it's gold-plated* - lmao !

It may have been expensive. As others note, that doesn't necessarily
mean good, nor does it protect it from the inherent limitations of
having such a small mechanical component or contact surface.
Either treat it with extreme care, or figure out some way to protect it
(shrink-wrap the whole adapter permanantly to the cable? Ugh!), or
consider it disposable... |

An expensive gold plated turd, you mean. Anything with a mini jack is
bad news and will break some time, though this seems to be unusual.

Sounds like a gold plated piece of crap. If it even looks like a Radio
Shack adapter (whether it is or isn't) take it back to a Radio Shack
and ask them to replace it. They'll take back anything that looks like
it's theirs.

Buy a set of headphones with a standard 1/4" plug. |

LOL! :-)) Perhaps because they've been "conditioned" to
seeing their stuff come back, broken. |

It's more like Rat Shack has sold so many variants that the newbie
salesdroids can't tell what's really in a previous version of the
catalog.

The gold-plated ones I received with my AKG and Sennheiser phones both
did that recently. Not appreciated!

That screw on, like the busted ones used to do.
