How do you get VHS tape playback to look good on an HDTV? The VCR I've
got hooked up now outputs through composite a/v. Would a VCR with
svideo output show a better picture?

In general, on an SD TV, S-Video will give a better picture than the
yellow composite video cable. The picture should be better with the
S-Video connection on a HD TV, but that depends on what the electronics
and software in HD TV are doing with the S-Video vs composite input
signals. VHS has limited horizontal resolution of approximately 240
discernible lines with 480 scan lines up the vertical. So don't expect a
VHS source to ever look very good on HD TV compared to DVDs with 704x480
resolution or HD with either 1280x720p60 or 1920x1080i30 resolution.

Yes, S-video port is 1 notch above composite to view

480i material.....

Component fed VHS material will or will not be better at 480p

upconversion depending on the VCR or HDTV processing capability.

The best possible 480i material is receiving HDTV Pgm via antenna

and down converting to 480i using S-Video... People owning

older Analog TVs w/S-video input port can do this AND will

do this when Analog TV dries up in 3 or so years.....

Heck...I haven't figured out how to get VHS tapes to look good on an SD set!

LOL

I was watching a (VHS) movie on a standard TV (in the basement) a few nights
ago.
(The tape I was watching was about 16 years old.)

Couldn't help but wondering if:

1. VHS tapes really "break down" that much. (It hadn't been viewed all that
much in 16 years. Maybe a total of 20 times.)
2. It looked the same back then as it does now, but I thought it looked
"really good" then.

Cheers,
Eric

I recently played some of my Laser Discs and wondered the same thing!

Well...

The playback you are seeing on your HDTV, from the VCR, is really good.
Super good. Its so good that you are seeing all the imperfections,
artifacting, and the "conversions" that the HDTV needs to do (from low-res
VCR) so it can drive all those physical lines.

So, the question becomes, "How do you make an HDTV look bad enough for a
VCR?". :^)

Not much you can do, other than playing with the display. Definetly bring
the sharpness down to lowest level. Does it have any voodoo compensation
filtering, line-doubling, ect controls for SD?

This may not be the best analogy, but its kind of like using a 22" inch PC
monitor, with at a native resolution of 1024x768, and then outputing 640x480
from your video card. It breaks apart. Subsititute the monitor the the
HDTV and video card for the VCR.

S-Video would eliminate most of the artifacting, but you'd still have the
weird resolution mismatch. Wouldn't bother chasing down an VCR with s-vid
though. Save those few bucks to go towards HD-DVD (or BluRay) when it comes
out.

I have still have a VCR, but its only used with a standard TV in the
basement. Never even attempted to see what it would look like on the HDTVs
upstairs....

Cheers,
Eric

For those of us who invested in a Super VHS deck back then, the payoff of
such an investment is now being realized. Old tapes still have a high
quality picture. I recorded most of my S-VHS material in SP. I recorded
long shows(documentaries) or daily shows in EP which still look good.

VHS tapes are never going to look good on an HDTV. Too few lines of
resolution. The bigger the screen, the worse they will look. The only
place they ever come near looking good is on a small-screen SDTV.

I have found that a fifth of Canadian Club improves the VHS image
dramatically.

Hmm, I would think it would make it look even fuzzier!

I have a XBR960 that uses a line doubler and I get great results with

VHS. High Def? No, but very good. Perhaps better that regular TV. I
think the 480i source is doubled while "normal" tv is not.

How come there aren't resolution settings that you can change on the HDTV set
for the different inputs you could use?

240, 300, 330, 450, etc. for the old equipment?

If TV's can change aspect ratios with the press of a button on a remote or menu,
why can't they change resolutions depending on the content or manual settings?

I'm gonna have to spring for a new old-style TV just to watch my videos in 2011?
Those SD TV's won't be on the shelves by then...maybe.

BTW, my cable company needs to replace all the wiring in my apartment building
before anybody gets HDTV, or digital channels for that matter! The -12 db signal
strength on the 30 year old RG-59 wire @ channel 85 (cable modem frequency) that
I get now is not gonna work well for DTV (and that is without a splitter in the
room).

Isn't RG-6 wire required for DTV & HDTV?

For long runs... RG-6 or better yet RG-11.....

I have never seen RG-11.
