Maximizing Battery Life |
|
|
When I got my Nikon D70, I ordered an additional battery (rechargeable
lithium ion). It's not that I take a lot of pictures at one time, I
just wanted to have a backup since you can't exactly go to the grocery
store and get a new one.
Anyhow, I was wondering which scenario would lead to longer lifetime
for the two batteries:
1. Alternate the batteries each time I use the camera. That is, use
battery A until it needs recharging. At that point, put a charged
battery B in the camera and recharge A until it's needed.
2. Use battery A exclusively, recharging it when necessary. When it no
longer can hold a decent charge, discard it and switch to battery B and
use in the same manner (realizing that this may take 1-2 years).

Frankly, with lithium ion, it shouldn't make all that much difference so
long as you make sure neither battery is ever *completely*
depleted...meaning sitting long enough after running down that it has ZERO
charge (you won't do this simply by running it down until your camera won't
operate...it takes more than that to completely deplete it).
I am still using my original, 5 year old Canon D30 lithium ion batteries in
my 10D, and they still hold a charge very well. I have about 7 batteries,
since I sometimes am away from power for a week or longer. These have ALL
been used on and off, in any number of cycles of charging. I always leave
two IN the charger, but the rest have performed incredibly well without any
special anything. |

Switch off the LCD screen will double the battery life on most digi cams!

Alternate batteries. Not because it lasts longer, but because you're
more likely to always have a spare battery with a charge. If you
just leave one sitting on a shelf it will lose its charge and then
a day will come when you will want to take a picture with two dead
batteries.
