I'm looking at trying to set something up for a jam for tips situation,
and don't want to spend big bucks until I see how it goes.

The pub has a PA system that's no great shakes.

I have an old Tascam 424 4-track recorder. Just wondering if this could
be used as a mixer into the PA system, or into a powered speaker?

Any help appreciated.

Depending how many mics and other stuff you have, an
adequate mixer that handles 4-5 mics could cost you less
than $100. Why'd you'd try to save $100 or less by using
something as substandard as an old Tascam recorder, escapes
me.

I guess a longer reply would be:

Since I have the Tascam, and don't particularly want to buy a minimal
unit but wait to get something better, could this work in a pinch.

What would the drawbacks be?

Knowing nothing else but the fact that you want at least 4
mic inputs, I'd say take a look at the Berhinger MXB1002.

The sub-$100 mixer could be what one uses in a pinch while
waiting to get something better.

Since you're going to need an amp and a speaker at minimum,
why not obtain them first and try to use them with the
Tascam. Once you do that, you'll know exactly what to do
next.

You might find more wisdom about how to use the Tascam 424
on the alt.music.home-studio group.

There is nothing to stop you from trying it. This is a professional
forum about live sound reinforcement. Even the non-pros wouldn't usually
use the Tascam for SR, but that's sensible in the context of the forum,
while your query is sensible in the context of your needs.

Reality is that you can try it without causing it, or yourself, or the
world any damage, and in the process you will learn whether or not this
works for you. If it does basicly work then maybe the tips will get you
a better mixer in a little while, _if you feel you need it_. And if not,
then just keep going with what works for you.

Relatively poor signal to noise ratio, not much EQ, etc. But again, it
could work fine for your own purposes and that is all that really
counts. Try it and find out. In a pub one rarely notices signal to noise
ratios. And you can easily record your sets, too.

If the pub's speakers are useable, try to convince the pub to consider (or
at least pretend to consider) buying a Behringer PMH1000 powered mixer, odds
are 50/50 that a shop would let you try it for free, or at least rent cheap.
They're only $300 and very versatile, so maybe the pub might even spring for
it if their current system is inadequate for even your limited needs.
