The best one out there now is probably the LG-3200a, which is also a Directv
HD box with a 4th generation chip in it. LG will be making boxes for Directv
that will have the 5th generation chip and also decode mpeg4. I'm not sure
when they are scheduled to come out. You are likely to have very good results
with the LG-3200a.

Panasonic and Toshiba both worked fine for me.
I have a Toshiba 3000 STB which I don't use anymore, I currently use a cable
STB. The Toshiba allowed me to select grey or black side bars for 4:3 mode.
It has been very quiet and reliable, but doesn't have HDMI out. Maybe the
newer STB's have it.
The Panasonic STB ran great for about 5 years and finally quit. I think a
power surge damaged the internal voltage supplied to the dish.

Sorry, don't know about any of the newer boxes.

Since the FCC is now mandating HDTV tuners in many /50% of the HDTV
sets, I recommend buying a Sony HDTV set with both a ATSC and
QAM tuner included... Their tuners scan very well and they
do not require additional remotes... just a more full featured
one.
For an external HDTV ASTC & QAM digital tuner included.....
buy the Samsung T-451 STB for $250... |

The only "good" ATSC tuner available today are two PCI cards. One from
BBTI and one from DVICO. Both have the LG 5th gen chip in them. Other
than that I would suggest you wait for the new combo satellite OTA LG
STB to come out. Hopefully you can use it for just OTA. IT will be the
first decent STB and will also have the LG 5th gen chip. It may
therefore be the BEST ATSC receiver on the market.
That is it may be the first ATSC receiver with the LG technology in it
that matches the prototype tested over a year ago and found to be the
best ATSC STB so far.
Or it could be no better than the BBTI and DVICO PCI cards.

Bob is lying again. There are "good" ATSC receivers available today.
The best one in my opinion is the LG-3200a, with the 4th generation
chip. It's not a good as the newer 5th generation maybe, but still
very good. The new Directv H20 receiver, when made by LG, with have
the 5th generation chip in it. I don't think it will be available
until the middle of next year, however.

Have you tried the Sony HDD 250 ? A bit pricey (MSRP $700) but quality
is excellent. Has HDMI output, along with QAM (analog cable) reception.
Pulls in channels great, including distant ones. Remote is easy to use.
It even has a cable card slot, just in case. |

There are no TV stations receivable in my basement apartment in the valley. What
should I do? Get an HDTV with no tuner? There is cable available, but the wires
are inadequate for use with DTV.
If I lived one floor up, I could put a dish on my balcony facing South West. But
I don't, so I won't. |
