Questions about Tivo |
|
|
I have replaytv and I'm thinking of switching to Tivo with the DVD burner
and I have a few questions. First of all is it possible to watch a tv show
while the tivo is recording another show? I am unable to do this with
replaytv so I am stuck using the VCR to record my show if my family wants to
watch something on the TV. I have a wireless ethernet bridge with replaytv,
it downloads the schedule okay but I am unable to use dvarchive to download
the shows on my pc. Will I be able to download the recorded shows to my pc
with a wireless connection with Tivo? And last of all how is custiomer
service with Tivo?

Yes and no. Standalone (i.e. non-Directv models) Tivo's have only a
single tuner, so they can only tune one show at a time. The usual
method to watch another show while one is recording is to split the
incoming cable and run one to the tivo and one to the tv. Then watch
the live show using the TV's tuner while the Tivo is recording. You
will not be able to use any Tivo functions with the live show however.
You could do the same thing w/ ReplayTV.

|
Well, if you do the above, you can record your show on the tivo and
watch the TV live.

With most Standalone Tivos, yes. However the DVD-integrated models
don't support Tivo-to-go yet. They have announced that it *will* be
supported and it should be out relatively soon. But if that's important
to you, you may want to hold off until it is officially supported.
Also, it is possible to hack the unit to add in transfer capability.
It's not that hard to do if you are familiar w/ standard computer
components and have enough patience to wade through sometimes scattered
instructions.

service with Tivo?
|
In general, good. Their warranty provider just recently went belly up
however, so there's been some issues with slow or hard to track warranty
repairs.

You ever hear of RF splitters? That's how to do it with any recorder. And
it can be done with your Replay too. I've got a Tivo and RCA PVR, plus a
vcr on my TV. I can record 3 shows at once and still watch live tv. you
could do the same. tbe model of the recorder doesn't matter one bit. TV
just has an RF input? Get a an RF switch, etc. There's always a way.

Actually, they do now. Version 7 of the software has been rolled out to the
DVD boxes as of either 7.1 or 7.2 (7.2 brought "Go To TiVo").

I have a similar question. I don't own a Tivo, but I understand that it's
possible to watch a show on a delayed basis at the same time it's being
recorded. If that's true, it should be possible to watch ANY show that's
on the hard disc while recording another one. True--or not?
Another question. A Tivo with a DVD burner should be able to play any DVD
while the HD is recording some show. IOW you should be able to use the DVD
as a player independently of what the rest of the Tivo is doing. Is that
true? If you're watching a show on the HD, or on a DVD, and it's time for
the Tivo to start recording a show, Tivo should start recording without
missing a beat or interfering with the playback function. Is that true?
Thanks a bunch,

I have 6 VCRs, which allows me to record 5 shows at the same time that I'm
watching another one. If I'm desperate I can record 6 shows and watch
another one live (but that's only happened twice in my life.) As my VCRs
wear out and start giving me trouble, I intend to replace them with PVRs or
DVD recorders. (BTW, when you have that many loads on the cable, you should
have a booster amp with 8 outputs. I bought one for $25.)

True. For Tivos with two tuners (DirecTV Tivos) you can record 2 |
programs while watching a third one, or while watching one of those
being recorded on a delayed basis.

well, my Tivo doesn't have a burner, I download from the Tivo to a |
standalone burner with internal hard drive. But what you say sounds
right. It might depend on the model of the Tivo with burner, though.
because on my burner with hard drive, you cannot watch a recorded
program (from the burner's hard drive) while recording another program
either to the hard drive, or from the HD to a DVA.

True as well. The limiter isn't hard drive activity, it's the number of
tuners. Only one live show can be tuned in at a time with a single
tuner. As many other things can be going on at the same time as the CPU
and memory can handle.

I don't know what you're doing, but you most certainly can watch one

You have a crummy wireless system. Using Buffalo G bridges (especially
the new high power ones), you wouldn't know it was wireless. Tivo might
be more tolerant of bad networking because they do not stream like
Replay, but copy files over the lan.
You can update guide data and surf the web with wireless, but the
latency and other factors in cheapo wireless units do not work well with
streamed video. You cannot do a "what was that, can you send it again"
with video you are watching in real time. At the same time, you don't
even notice if it takes a quarter second longer to load a web page. |

Yes I know. Everything was networked fine when we had comcast with a cable |

verizon tells me to contact replaytv and replaytv tells me to call verizon.

That's cause you are trying to change the DVR's tuner (Replay, TiVo,
whatever). What you need to do is use the TV's built in tuner to watch
something live while your DVR is recording. How you accomplish/wire that
varies from setup to setup.

Contact a local computer person. A mid-level tech should be able to come
over and set things straight for not too much money.

I believe that's because it was recording directly to DVD, and only
DVD-RAM discs supporting reading and writing simultaneously. If you had
gotten a hard drive-based DVD recorder you wouldn't have had that
problem, but they're much more expensive.
