What is the Passthrough Function? I'm looking for a DV Camcorder and want
to transfer VHS tapes to DVD's and use the camcorder as the means to get it
to the PC. I thought as long as the Camcorder has a Firewire port, that was
all you needed.
VHS deck, through the Camcorder to the PC, then once the tape is saved to
the PC, then burn to DVD?

Is the Passthrough Function just another name for the Firewire port. Please
shed some light for me.

Some DV camcorders only let an analog input signal be recorded onto the
tape. You then have to play the tape to get the digital signal sent to the
Firewire port.

Others allow the analog signal to pass through to the Firewire port - hence
the term. It means the camcorder can, in effect, act like an analog-digital
converter.

You can also record onto the tape at the same time. You may wish to do this
if you want to keep a DV archive of the VHS, though it sounds like you are
going to use the DVD for that very purpose.

HTH,

John.

The other poster gave a more detailed answer, here is a little more basic.
That Firewire port is the normal means to get digital video out of the
camcorder. For passthru, the camcorder needs a way to take the analog input
into the camcorder. As Mr. Miller said, the analog can either be recorded
or just converted to digital as it passes thru the camcorder, and comes out
the firewire port to the computer.
