Going To Buy Equipment... What to get? |
|
|
Hey,
So, I currently have an Audigy 2ZS card and record direct and the sound
is pretty good when I keep it mellow but when I use distortion, it
sounds like junk. So, I'm hitting up the store this weekend to buy new
equipment but need some opnions on which route to go.
1) New soundcard.... I was looking at an Audiophile 2496 (M-Audio). I
only record guitar so, I dont need a card w/ a ton of inputs. Just one
will do. Will the distortion sound be improved w/ this card?
2) Either going to get a Shure 57 or a cheap amp simulator. I hear the
amp. sims can sound kinda cheesy. I have a cheap 15 W practice amp,
but, I LIKE the way my guitar sounds out of it. So, I am kind of
steering away from an amp .sim. Now, w/ a Shure 57, will my distortion
come through clear? Basically all I'm asking is to record my music
EXACTLY as I hear it when I play thru the amp.
So, any opinions? Is the Audiophile and a Shure 57 my best bet? If I
record this method, will the recording sound vibrant and loud and
clear? When I imagine mic records, I imagine the sound as being
'distant'.. and direct records as being 'loud and clear'..... Is my
picture of this wrong?
Thanks

That's what distortion sounds like. Nothing wrong so far.

Distortion will sound like distortion. You need to re-think how you're
recording your guitar. The Audigy isn't a great card, but unless you're
doing something wrong, an Audiophile isn't going to make a huge
improvement in your recordings.

Cheap doesn't equate to good. An SM57 is a pretty common mic for
recording guitar amplifiers, but you need more than just the mic. You
can't connect that directly to a sound card unless the card has a mic
input. And mic inputs on sound cards, as a rule, don't sound very good.
I'g suggest getting either the SM57 and a reasonable mic preamp or a
decent amp simulator like a Sans Amp or Pod.

Yes, they can. They can also sound pretty good, but they never sound
quite like a real amplifier recorded in a good space.

That's really very difficult to do. It usually requires a few
microphones, a fair amount of experimentation with placing and mixing
them, and the room that the amp is in not only needs to sound good to
you, but it needs to sound good to the microphones. There is no cheap
and simple solution to getting a good recorded "heavy" guitar sound.

Not without a mic preamp (which could be a mixer). What do you have
that you can plug the SM57 into? If you're thinking the Audiophile
sound card, think again. |

I suspect it would make little difference in your circumstances.

..... because you are accustomed to it. Does anybody else like it ? I
suspect that the difference between what you hear and what the recorded
sound is like it your ears in the room, versus a mic in front of the amp.

A high quality omni mic in the room is the only way you can approacj that
sound.

Yes.
I suspect the weakest link is your amp, but maybe not. Also, you'll hear
almost NOTHING without a mic preamp, or a soundcard with a mic input !
