HDTV ATSC STB tuner comparison |
|
|
I am planning to buy a High Definition ATSC set top box tuner.
Can you tell me is these any comparison discussions and ratings?
Is there any forum on this specific topics?
Is eBay the better place to buy or any other competitive priced seller?
Is Radio Shack sales for $99 a good deal?
I plan to use the Comcast cable (regular programming) input at first, but
later may be getting a roof top antenna.
Thank you.

That means you can receive OTA Antenna digital SD & HD TV stations..
If the digital tuner does Include a QAM digital Cable tuner also...
then you can pick up the Basic Network unscrambled HD stations too
IF your Cable Co carries them..

Walmart has the $120 clearance deal tuner too, but no QAM...

Comcast Cable regular Programs 'means' chan 1-99 Analog Programs only?
THese programs can be processed by your Digital TVs Analog tuner...
A QAM tuner (in HDTV or external QAM STB)can feed off the Cable RF
to the Digital TV and pick up the Network HD Programs.... w/ no
TV Guide & non conventional Channel Numbers...
QAM digital channel numbers run from 81.1 thru 124.20....

Here's one place to try for local info. As far as Quam tuning you'll have to
check if in your area it is possible to tune your providers hd channels.
It's different for each provider and can change every time they decide to
realign the channels. IIRC the radio shack receiver is OTA only, and you'll
find most receivers that also tune quam will be more expensive. Dependent on
your distance from the transmitters you might try a indoor antenna, before
you put up your outdoor one. |

OK, I found it:

But this thread is January 2005.
This forum does not list what are comparsion of STB tuner boxes for our area
with Comcast regular cable services

your likely to find some discussion about tuners and how well they work on
your areas cable provider. As far as just a direct comparison of tuner I
don't have a source for reviews. If you want to try Quam tuning it would be
best to know if it's possible to tune the channels off your cable provider
before you pay extra for a quam enabled tuner. Where possible, OTA, IMO is
the way to go, the tuners are cheaper and more available. I've got one of
the USDigital tunes from Wall Mart and have no complaints with the way in
tunes digital channels in my area. This tuner maybe on close out and
wouldn't be a bad way to start tuning digital |

The only "good" ATSC tuner available today are two PCI cards. One from |
BBTI and one from DVICO. Both have the LG 5th gen chip in them. Other
than that I would suggest you wait for the new combo satellite OTA LG
STB to come out. Hopefully you can use it for just OTA. IT will be the
first decent STB and will also have the LG 5th gen chip. It may
therefore be the BEST ATSC receiver on the market.
That is it may be the first ATSC receiver with the LG technology in it
that matches the prototype tested over a year ago and found to be the
best ATSC STB so far.
Or it could be no better than the BBTI and DVICO PCI cards.

Thanks, I am more interested in set top box, not PCI cards.
Probably do not want to watch TV with my tiny and slow laptop computer.

Ridiculous.
Our RCA DTC-100 set-top-box has performed perfectly since December of 1999.
In the shadow of two mountain ranges, no less. |
