digital tutner vs. set top box
sorry about this silly question: is there a difference between an LCD
television with a digital tuner and an LCD that cannot handle digital
signal itself combined with a set top box. Although digital broadcasting
is working in Europe, it seems to me that it is almost impossible to buy
a tv with digital tuner, as well as a dvd recorder. I am right if I say
that a set top box transforms digital tv signal into anolgue. With a CRT
this wouldnt be an issue since it uses analogue signal but with LCD TV?
LCD tv needs to transform the analogue signal from the set top box back
to digital wich I think would worsen the picture quality, doesnt it? Is
it possible to compare this to an LCD monitor connected via sub or DVI-D
to my PC card? The long and the short of it- is there a considerable
difference in picture quality between LCD television equipped with a
digital tuner and LCD receiving signal from a set top box.
thanks a lot
Pavel

From what I've been told, with a STB you can actually record HD onto a
regular VCR via Line 1 input/output whereas in a built in HD tuner in a

TV set , you can't do squat except watch HD, since your regular
(analog) VCR only has a NTSC tuner. Am I right on this one ????

.. . .

Not necessarily. A digital STB can output in several flavors of
digital or analog. A well-equipped STB might have either a DVI or
HDMI output (both digital) and component, composite and S-Video
outputs (all analog, but the latter two cannot deliver HD). It might
even have a 15-pin jack to go to a computer monitor. That's analog
too.

Yes, it's better to keep the conversions to a minimum. But I doubt
you'd see much difference.

If by "sub" you mean the 15-pin connector most computer monitors use,
that's analog, similar (but not identical) to component. If your
monitor has a DVI input, choose a tuner with a DVI output.

No.

You can't record HD on a regular VCR. What you can do with most STBs
is downconvert HD to NTSC (analog SD) and record that through a
composite connection. It's not HD, but it's very good SD. Of course,
most VCRs will make it worse yet, so you might not be happy with the
result.

There are D-VHS recorders that can record HD via Firewire from a
compatible STB, but that's a whole other level of complication.
Recording HD on a hard drive is much more practical. But that
generally requires either an STB with its own DVR built in or an HD
tuner card for a PC.

Or use the Firewire feed into the PC.
