MPEG starts and stops before download is complete |
|
|
Hello,
I have some problems with some .MPG video files I recently uploaded
to my site. In the past, I've been using WMV format for short movies,
but this time I wanted to try MPEG. Here is what happens:
1) Initially had the files arranged in a playlist (.m3u). When someone
clicks on the playlist, it starts playing the first movie, and when
it gets to about 3-4 seconds (the original clip is about 10 seconds)
it stops the playback and skips to the next clip. Here, the same
thing happens - it starts playing immediately, but when it finishes
the part that has been downloaded, it stops and skips to the next
clip (and I think the download stops too). The clips are short, so
I was hoping to make it download the whole thing, before start
playing.
2) I was thinking it have something to do with the playlist, so made
the files playable separately. When the user clicks on a file, the
same thing happens - the download starts, and the playback starts
almost immediately. When the playback catches up with the download,
instead of stopping the playback and resuming later, the playback
and the download just stop like this is the end of the clip.
Several people told me that they had the same problem when downloading
the clips, so it's not something on my computer. Is this something that
is:
a) inherent in the MPEG format, and there is nothing to be done about
it;
b) caused by something I did when encoding the clips (I used
VirtualDub);
c) caused by some webserver settings;
d) something else?
What do you recommend me to do? Use WMV? All I want is to make sure
that the _whole_ clip is downloaded and played.
The clips I'm talking about are here:

Thanks,
- Alex

Well, that's weird... Can you check the file size (if you still have
it)? The sizes should be 0.6 MB and 1.5 MB for the two MPGs... The
reason I ask is that the webstat here said you (or somebody else) just
downloaded only 71KB of one of the files... Maybe than the webstat is
wrong?
Thanks,

I d/l'ed two files 600K and 1.5MB. They both play in the VLC media player.
Did you make these? I'm with a group doing stuff for web and cable
access shows in our area and if you had any inclination of letting us
use any of your stuff, drop me a line at removeallthismczet@cat23.com.
Yeah, were amateurs, but our stuff is a notch above the beginners
playing with lightsabers level. Mostly satire, political and otherwise,
some animation. Our site is http://www.cat23.com |
