Well my trusty old editor has finally bit the dust so I'm starting research
into a new suite. My biggest question is, do I really need any sort of card
like a Canopus if I'm shooting with a PD-150 (and eventually upgrading to a
similar HD camera) or would I be fine building a top of the line computer
and just using Premiere Pro 1.5 and firewire?

no.. a $29 OHCI firewire card is fine.

Assuming you mean HDV.. the same firewire card works for HDV
