Dual Layer DVD Recorder availability in US??? |
|
|
I have a large video collection I want to transfer to DVD. I'm waiting
for dual layer discs to be available in the US. As I understand it,
the capacity of today's rewiteable discs is only 2 hrs.
Ant idea on when recorders with greater capcity, ie Blu Ray or dual
layer will be available in the US?

This is not true.2 hours for an 8000kbps bitrate. You won't ever need
such a big bitrate for writing a home made movie (from a magnetic
tape) to a DVD.You can easily fit 4 hours in a 4.7GB DVDR.
Forget about dual layer. It's already *dead*.Still extremely expensive
discs, and with big compatibility problems both with DVD-ROMs and
stand alone dvd players. In the (not so close) future we will all go
directly, for blue ray (or something similar) I guess. |

The capacity of todays media is 4.7GB for single layer, and 8.5GB for dual
layer. Depending on your bitrate used and the content, and what type of
audio you have, you can fit many hours. There is no finite time capacity |

Actually, 8000kbps video + 1636kbps audio (PCM) is only
75 minutes on a DVD5 disc.
OTOH, if you change the bitrate to 4000kbps and use
256kbps AC3 for the audio, you can fit around 143
minutes on a DVD. (4000kbps for full-D1 resolution
720x480, with a good encoder running at high quality is
almost always pretty decent.)
And regular VHS probably only needs half-D1 resolution
(352x480), so you can go with an even lower bitrate of
around 3000kbps and pack more material on a DVD5 disc
(around 190 minutes). |
