Many codec bundles have unnecessary stuff included, and of course there
is no need to have more codecs installed than necessary to do the job.
Given the number of choices, it is a bit confusing to decide on which
ones one really needs.

Beyond what comes standard with the OS, what would be your top few video
(and audio??) codecs you would be sure to add to a new Windows
installation, assuming your goals were:
1. editing and authoring of DVDs, VCDs, or S-VCDs for personal use (high
quality output)
2. sharing video files over the web ( high enough quality and smaller
file size)
3. general playback of downloaded files

I have added the Indeo XP bundle (v. 5.11), the current free DIVX Play
bundle (will the included Pro codec expire after a time period?), LAME,
and OGGVorbis. I assume XVID should be on the list. Any others?

Gary

A quality Mpg encoder. CinemaCraft Basic is my favorite. The Main
Concept concoder with Sony Vegas is decent too.

Quicktime encoding. QT pro is the easiest way to get this at an
inexpensive price.

Mikeysoft will give you the windows media encoders for free.

Yes, the Xvid or Divx is a withwhile addition.

Playback?
Just get the Videolan player and Media Player Classic, and Quicktime
Player and your bases are covered.

Shareing over the web? Quicktime a good choice. Windows Media format for
ease of use. Xvid or Mpg2 for larger files.
