Output mpeg3 (Xvid?) to DV? What about DVD? Codec Hell |
|
|
A co-worker missed an episode of Lost - the first one and they won't
reply it for a long, long time. So I downloadedit. When I play the
downloaded AVI video on Linux it says its mpeg3, then Windows IDs the
video as type xvid. I downloaded the xvid codec and all I see are
random vertical lines on Windows - but on Linux its fine. I tried
burning it to DVD and the video quality ended up all jerky, as if the
frame rate was low. My Canon ZR-85 has video input capabilities, via
the Firewire port. I've done it before using DVIO.exe and Windows
Movie Maker. I tried using Windows Movie Maker but it crashes. Big
surprise -I know. DVIO only takes files of type raw AVI. I can't
convert because Virtualdub will not open the xvid file.
What can I use to convert this file to raw AVI? I know it would take
alot of space but I have ample room on the drive.
Any other suggestions on either getting this thing to tape, or DVD on a
somewhat respectable form? I was going to record the video camera's
tape to my VHS VCR and let the guy have it that way. He's not that
sophisticated so I dunno.
On another note, I wish people would stop using these alien codecs.
This is worse than dependency hell onLinux. Codec hell.

Find a copy of DVDSanta (www.dvdsanta.com) and import your AVI into the
application. Select NTSC and 16:9 and "High" video resolution and then
press the "Create DVD" button. After the conversion is finished, you'll
have a set of .VOB files, .IFO and .BUP (DVD format) that you can burn
onto a DVD and watch in your DVD player. |

Try the free videolan player.
Are you trying to play that Xvid file on a windows maching by double
clicking the file? I often have no joy doing that myself by then it
plays fine if I do a file/open.
Still, get the videolan player, lots less hassle. Its a quick D/L. No
spy or adware. Crisp and clean.
Xvid seems the most common codec for torrent d/l's of stuff. Its a good
codec. A hour can be compressed into about 500Meg or so with very high
quality. |

I'll check it out.
As for xvid... ugh. I can understand Divx, and you can do the same
thing with divx - one hour at about 400 megs. But IRC'ers seem to have
a fetish for xvid so I better figure out a wat to deal with it. I
don't do p2p.
But I not only want to play it, I want to burn it to DVD so I can give
it to somebody else and he can play it in his DVD player. He doesn't
know codecs from his ass. |

I believe tmpgenc express will convert from xvid to mpg and you can then
author those mpg's to a dvd without hassle.

Actually, no AutoGK is a very good piece of software.
Xvid should not care one whit whether Divx is installed. Unless you are
married to Divx, uninstall it, and just install Xvid. The download you
want for this is right here.
http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/
You will also find links to coversion guids for both Xvid and Divx here.
If you want to use Divx, uninstall Xvid and just install Divx.
www.doom9.org has a number of step by step guides on exactly what
software and exactly what steps to take. Right down to the 'tick this
button' detail.
If what your really looking for is the software with the 'easy button'
perhaps you may want to look into that Dvdsanta thingy that someone
posted about a bit up the thread. |

Actually, there's nothing wrong with Xvid at all. It's the
most common codec in use for video trading. The problem lies not in
heaven, but within yourself, or at least your computer. Somehow, your
codec installations have become corrupted. May I ask which version of
Xvid you're trying to install? Also, a good way around all of this is
to try the all-purpose ffdshow codec, which also has a handy Video for
Windows front-end. In any case, there's no reason at all why
Virtualdub shouldn't be able to open an Xvid-encoded AVI.
