Panasonic dmr recorder - placed a taiyo yuden disk in there and it
came up with a close message but can't get the disk out.

The disk is a taiyo yuden dvd-r 8x tyg02 (not fake) disc.
Placed it in my e50 recorder and it started to record like it
has with other brands of media for the past 18 months.
Then it stopped, closed down and turned itself off.
Turned it back on and get the RECOVER message, then I get the CLOSE
message. I can't eject the disk, it is stuck in there.

Any way of getting the media out?
I have tried turning the power off at the wall, turning it back on and
pressing the eject button but the unit keeps on wanting to read the
media then recover and finally close.

Been told its out of warranty and would have to be sent to panasonic
who could charge much more than what a new one goes for.

Never will I buy a taiyo yuden disc again!

Doug,

The Panasonics will eject a stuck disk if you hold the open/close button in
continuously while you cycle and hold the power switch on. Taiyo Yudens are
excellent disks, but you will discover that the Panasonic (and other DVD
recorders) only work reliably with certain disks. I have an older DMR-E30
and it works properly with Verbatim, Ritek, and Samsung, but NOT with many
other high quality brands.

There is a lot of compatibility information on the web regarding which
players work best with which blank disks. I or other newsgroup members can
help you further in locating this type of info if you need more assistance.

why blame the disk ??
could it be that the unit itself is at fault and it was a coincidence that
it happened when you used the Taiyo Yuden disk ??

just a thought

Just got a DMR-ES20 from Best Buy. Seems to work ok recording TV and
camcorder videos (good quality on SP mode). I just tried -RW and the
included Panasonic -RAM disk though; haven't yet tried burning to -Rs
and testing on other DVD players.

What media are recommended for the DMR-ES20? Any to avoid? Do the
produced -Rs work well with other DVD players?

Thanks.

Managed to get the taiyo yuden disk out.
Went back to the other media and worked fine.
Placed a taiyo yuden back in and the recorder simply does not like
this media.

I'll stay clear of taiyo yuden in future.

Agreed I have three Panasonic standalone DVD recorders and had to stop using
Ridata and Ritek disks but have no problem with Ridisk Xtreme or Datawite
Titanium.

Doug,

Glad my suggestion worked to force the Panasonic to eject the disk. I found
out about this on some web forum, and still wonder why Panasonic doesn't
mention it in the Owner's Manual, at least not in the manual I got with my
DMR-e30.

I've burned literally thousands of DVDs, and find that the Fujifilm and
Samsung disks work consistently well in my DMR-e30, as do a number of
private label brands. I don't think the higher cost disks are necessarily
the best choice in this particular case, since the Panasonic (at least my
model) is quite fussy about what it will use. I have a number of other
burners here from Pioneer, Sony, and NEC, and all of them work great with
the Taiyo Yuden disks, but the Panasonic drive is different.

If you go to Meritline's site, or DVDRHelp.com you will find tons of
compatibility information.

Tdk made in Japan are good. Burned over 50 in my Panasonic and no
coasters. I am in Europe and we get only the Japan made ones. I know
that the ones sold in the US are often bad. Even the packing is
different. I only buy my media in Europe and always get the ones from
Japan. I use them because they are on the recommended media list both
for my computer burner (NEC) as well as Panasonic.

Bye!

well here in aus we get none of the jap ones, just taiwan crap, though the
new 16x ones seem to be much better than the 8x, the +r 4x were awesome, but
they were a ricoh disc.

In an article in Australian PC User November 2005 the Magazine is surprised
at the burning errors they encounter with TDK the discs were actually
manufactured by CMC Magnetic Corporation the same company the make Laser.

Utility at http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com may help you find what brands
you are actually buying. Most brands are rebadged.
