They have: The Seven Samurai

They have: Sudoku

We have: The NY Times Crossword Puzzle

(The last pair has nothing to do with film, but it's another artistic
& technological example of Western deficiencies.) ;-)

Don't worry, your comment about the Japanese film industry immediately
tagged your post as tongue-in-cheek humor. There's a very good reason
why Japanese films are the butt of all those jokes. ;-)

It would be fun if I could find a way to disagree with you, but I
can't.

Mine was just a rant, probably stemming from the advent of the
commercial Hollywood block-busters; that's when I feel Hollywood went
south (not that they aren't south already!?)

But the greatest films and technology originated here, and when I
really stop to think things over, Citizen Kane was not a bad flick.

And as artistic as anime is, Snow White wasn't bad for its time.

But I still think the future is worrisome; maybe it's current tastes,
but art isn't as much a part of film as it used to be.

On the other hand, maybe I'm just getting old.

I hate to admit this, but I was somewhat serious.

Yes, their early attempts were laughable and good fodder for MST3K,
but they continue to get better while the western world seems to
continue in a Romanesque decline.

Well, maybe next year . . .

You're right about Hollywood, though. It's become a movie mill that
produces lots of junk and an occasional gem. The indies seem to have
the field now. But like so many good things that emerge out of capitalism,
as soon as some of them become rich or famous, they sell out to the
corporate interest of the Hollywood producers. Only a handful of
directors and actors are able or willing to resist the lure of the
big bucks in favor of their artistic vision. Take Cronenberg, for
example, he's tried really hard to stay independent. Recently, I saw
"Spider". In the DVDs featurette he says that he and the cast had to
forego their salaries in order to get money to produce the film. The
only people that got paid were the crew and post-production.

Some think it's the greatest film ever made.

Are you acquainted with Mexican cinema of the late 1940's and 1950's?
That was the golden era of Latin-American movies. As a result of the
HUAC persecution in Hollywood, Mexico enjoyed an influx of American
emigres nurtured in Hollywood. Films in the "Mariachi" genre and the
historical epics starring such actors as Pedro Almendaris, Jorge Negrete,
Pedro Infante and Libertad Lamarque had a visual and narrative quality
matched only by the best Hollywood films, all thanks to the American
expertise that came there fleeing the anti-communist witch-hunt.

To my knowledge, no one has yet written a book about how Mexican
cinema benefited in the late '40s and early '50s from the McCarthy era.
Now that would be an interesting book to read!

I like anime, but I think it's been done to death now. In my opinion,
the Disney animated films of the 1940's are unequalled. I still get a lump
in my throat when I hear Snow White sing "Some Day..." or when Dumbo is
chased out of the stable, or when Bambi loses his mother, or when Pinnochio
becomes a real flesh and blood boy. Those films will last forever!

Ah, but how do you explain films like "Sling Blade", a movie about genuine
heroism; about a man who finds happiness and some normalcy after a long
life of misery and rejection and sacrifices it all to save a boy and his
mother?

Well, you probably know the old saying: "Youth is wasted on the young."
