this city decided that it didn't need to mess with SPL meters. it just
passed an ordinance that any exhaust system that is not stock is
illegal.

So that also puts all the muffler shops out of business. NONE of the
mufflers are stock. They are all aftermarket.

i don't understand this statement.

i have been doing shows at Harley / Buell all summer. i am not a motorcycle
'buff' but all the ones i saw for sale came with mufflers. (the Harley
shows are in a different city the one with the noise ordinance)

im not sure on this but i think the police officer gets to make the
determination on wither the equipment is 'stock' then its up to the person
to prove in court that his equipment is indeed legal or just pay the fine.

at the Harley shows some of the bikes were quite loud, drowning out a rock
band and about 5kW (in amp power) of mains.

Which means that they are loud enough to cause instant permanent hearing
damage for people within say 100 feet of the bike.

What Peter said. Most urban areas and many smaller towns are fairly drowning
in noise. Auto mfrs. are designing noise-canceling systems in their autos.
The vast majority of noise is totally unneccessary. Noise is unhealthy and
dangerous in the long run. The moral "right" to create unnecessary noise is
non-existent.

We as engineers need to join the cause to keep levels down. We all know the
ill effects of an act that's too loud onstage.

The libertarians would say "Your right to swing your fist ends at my face".
If that's true, the right to make noise ends at my ears.

Loud does NOT equal good. Louder does NOT equal better. Some people just
want to be loud so they will be noticed. Very child-ish. Please ponder the
next word:

Peace,

On the other end of the spectrum, I saw the Grateful Dead at Madison
Square Garden in 1979 mic up a Harley that was participating in Drums
segment of the show. I guess they just couldn't say no to the Angel who
was driving it!
