What's the regulation where you live?

Alameda County (California) has a new ordinance: if anyone complains it's
to loud by definition, no questions asked. The county sheriffs were
apparently having too much trouble working sound level meters. It applies
to all noise, including power tools and barking dogs. So much for
rehearsing in the garage if you have cranky neighbors.

And that's hwo it's been here in the northern Sierra Nevada boonies
forever, as far as I can tell. Law doesn't even _have_ SPL meters. One
idiot with a crab in their shorts is all it takes to make a mess of
things. We have had one deupty tell a complainer they were way out of
bounds, which was pleasant, but most aren't willing to go against the
word of the law in support of its intent.

Still don't get it, but let me guess: it is something valid and applicable
only for or within the US of A, and therefor more or less insignificant for
the rest of the world?

i did a series of show this summer with bands and classic car "cruze ins".
the show was in a shopping center parking lot. it became quit popular as it
had been running weekly in the summertime for several years. some weeks we
has 200 to 300 cars. apparently a neighbor (with political clout) took
offence at the activities. as the parking lot is private property the
enforcement is limited but once on public roads it became "open season" on
the cars and bikes.
the local PD showed up weekly with 6 units and began handing out equipment
violation tickets en mass.

this city decided that it didn't need to mess with SPL meters. it just
passed an ordinance that any exhaust system that is not stock is illegal.

How does that work if you made the bike?

Department Of Transportation set standards for motor vehicles. If its
DOT compliant then you should be able to use it on the street .....

you need to get a dot certificate before you get VIN(vehical id numbers)
that are needed to register it
this applys to home made trailers and modified vehicals(think school bus
turned into a RV)

far as i know ALL noise ordnances are local (in the US) I don't know of any
state that has any. (except maybe pertaining to aircraft sonic booms)

only issue i have run into was a show at the harness racing track. (but
that's not the city i live in) it was a dismal venue compared to the park.

mostly places around here are pretty "free and easy" after all the original
Woodstock farm isn't far away and Woodstock 2000 was just up the road at the
air force base.

So that also puts all the muffler shops out of business. NONE of the
mufflers are stock. They are all aftermarket.
